Petition causes Legion dispute

Local Legionnaire says he signed anti-war statement ’as an individual’

By Jake Palmateer

Staff Writer

A dispute over an anti-war petition signed by a Vietnam veteran has evolved into a war of words among Schoharie County American Legionnaires.

At a Schoharie County Legion meeting Tuesday, Gary Schacher, adjutant of Cobleskill’s Post 57, read from a letter condemning Post 1269 of Sharon Springs and the county Legion organization, according to Schoharie County Legion Commander Raul Rodriguez.

The letter, posted on cobleskillveterans.org, says a "radical group of malcontents and traitorous individuals (are) bent on the destruction and/or dilution of a grand organization."

The letter also says Post 57 will disassociate itself from all matters concerning Post 1269.

1. this would be funny
if it wasn't so sad. the American Legion enforces strict discipline on it's members, even when they don't identify themselves as members? that's just silly. Sounds like the Oneill faction is a little paranoid.

imagine living in a world where you see 'peace activists' under every bed and in every closet. it's like the bogeyman.

4. When the American Legion "undermined the war effort"
in Bosnia

http://billmon.org/archives/002107.html">Aid and Comfort

Dear Mr. President:

The American Legion, a wartime veterans organization of nearly three-million members, urges the immediate withdrawal of American troops participating in "Operation Allied Force.''

...

Mr. President, the United States Armed Forces should never be committed to wartime operations unless the following conditions are fulfilled:

* That there be a clear statement by the President of why it is in our vital national interests to be engaged in hostilities;

* Guidelines be established for the mission, including a clear exit strategy;

* That there be support of the mission by the U.S. Congress and the American people; and

* That it be made clear that U.S. Forces will be commanded only by U.S. officers whom we acknowledge are superior military leaders.

It is the opinion of The American Legion, which I am sure is shared by the majority of Americans, that three of the above listed conditions have not been met in the current joint operation with NATO ("Operation Allied Force'').

In no case should America commit its Armed Forces in the absence of clearly defined objectives agreed upon by the U.S. Congress in accordance with Article I, Section 8, of the Constitution of the United States.

Sincerely,
Harold L. "Butch'' Miller,
National Commander

5. You know very well
that it (the American Legion) is nothing but a strike breaking outfit used by capitol for that purpose, and that is the reason we have all those big clubhouses and that is the reason I pulled out of it. They have been using the dumb soldiers to break strikes.

One does not have to have been in combat to be a member of the American Legion.
