Schwarzenegger FIRES Flood Control Panel: Resisting Development at Levees
Schwarzenegger Fires Flood Control Panel
The state Reclamation Board had begun resisting development along vulnerable levees.

By Nancy Vogel, Times Staff Writer

SACRAMENTO — Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger on Tuesday fired all six members of the state Reclamation Board, an agency that oversees flood control along California's two biggest rivers and had recently become more aggressive about slowing development on flood plains.

The Republican governor replaced the members — who serve indefinite terms at the governor's pleasure — with seven of his own appointees, most with ties to agriculture and the engineering profession. One board seat had been vacant since spring.

Five of the fired members had been appointed by Gov. Gray Davis, a Democrat, and one had first been appointed by Gov. Pete Wilson, a Republican, then reappointed by Davis....

***

When Hurricane Katrina breached levees and flooded New Orleans a month ago, the board voted to review all urban development plans proposed for Central Valley flood plains — a power it has long held but only occasionally used.

Schwarzenegger spokeswoman Julie Soderlund said the appointments had been in the works for "quite some time to ensure the most qualified individuals were chosen."...

3. I suppose you're right
about his strings being pulled. However I would have thought that Arnold's political advisors might have had some input as well. This is a spectacularly tone deaf announcement given how prominent hurricane and failing levee stories are these days. He could have stonewalled the commission for a few months and then replaced the commissioners. By that time it would have been a page B-24 story.

4. Wonder if DIEBOLD told him to give their relatives

some of those positions?

After all, they helped get him into office.

8. that's what I figure
get those sympathetic to development in there right away before ANY damage is done to the master plans of the land abusers. DieBold appts make excellent sense - remember, the fruit doesn't fall from the tree and I would assume those family appt recipients would be on par ethically with Diebold execs.

Wetlands, schmetlands... who needs them anyway. It's not like they protect us from flooding and severe storms or do anything other than collect duck poop.

9. Terminator Vs. Mother Earth
Edited on Wed Sep-28-05 09:34 AM by SpiralHawk
It couldn't get much clearer than this -- mysogyny on the Grand Scale, typical of BushCo Inc. as well. They fear the feminine in all full expressions, and make war against her - within and without. They become coarse, unfeeling, unaware and cringing from the Halfside of Life they cannot feel. And so the UNBALANCE. The sickness of soul. The Mind of Materialism. The destruction of the places and forces that sustain their lives.

This will not stand.

10. What a fucking idiot.
You know, a lot of those levees are either in or close to areas that will be badly damaged when the Hayward / Rogers Creek fault system lets loose.

Do you know what happens to earthen levees in a large earthquake? Do you want to know?

11. Not a smart move by a governor with only a 38% approval rating
And right in the middle of the most destructive hurricane season in U.S. history.

It's almost as if the Gropinator doesn't want to be re-elected.

12. No, it would be a dumb move for someone with a 50% approval rating
When you're at 38%, it's pretty apparent even to Musclehead that he doesn't stand a chance in 2006 in a real election with a focused electorate not distracted by the circus of a recall election and 100 candidates.

So, he's got a little more than a year to loot the California state coffers. Gotta get crackin' if he's going to reward his patrons because time is running out.

14. Agreed. This is lame duck time for Ahnold
He'll be paying back an awful lot of patrons in the next year.

The best thing about his tenure as governor is that I can close off all 'Hollyweird Liberal' comments by reminding Repubs that he's one of their own.

I'm counting the days until he leaves office.

They want to build in more flood plains? WTF are they going to do, pave over the bypass? Idiots. We need more bypasses, not less.

25. are all the replacements Republican conservative cronies?
from 2nd page:

"The new members are
Cheryl Bly-Chester, owner of a Roseville engineering firm;

Rose Burroughs, owner of a livestock company in Denair;

Benjamin Carter, a Colusa farmer;

Maureen Doherty, a Maxwell rancher;

Francis "Butch" Hodgkins, former executive director of the
Sacramento Area Flood Control Agency;

Emma Suarez, a Folsom attorney for the California Farm Bureau Federation;

and Teri Rie, a Contra Costa County civil engineer."

I searched them looking for Republican ties.

Cheryl Bly-Chester was one of the many 2003 candidates for Governor.

Ben Carter contributed to a R-congresscritter campaign
"a farmer" ... on what scale???
