Protesters tell Pombo: Hands off Species Act (Stockton CA)
SCOTT SMITH
Record Staff Writer
Published Tuesday, Sep 27, 2005

STOCKTON -- A group of environmentalists, farmers, and fishermen gathered in Stockton Monday to protest legislation by Rep. Richard Pombo that it says tears holes in the federal safety net for wildlife living on the brink of extinction.

The group, following a brief news conference, hand-delivered to Pombo's Stockton office the signatures of 3,000 Californians objecting to Pombo's revised version of the Endangered Species Act.

Former Rep. Pete McCloskey -- a Republican like Pombo -- co-authored the original 1973 law and stood nearby when President Nixon signed it into law.

McClosky said he's so angry about Pombo's bill, he is tempted him to leave retirement, move from his home in Yolo County and oppose the former Tracy city councilman in the next congressional election. <snip>

4. Teddy Roosevelt would be
rolling over in his grave to see what a bunch of corporate whores the GOP has become.

I hope Pombo gets defeated. He is a dangerous guy and right up there with Tom DeLay.

7. Pombo is a rancher, and ranchers don't like critters
The things which are dear to Pombo's heart are closest to home, specifically his ranch in Northern California.

For example, when the National Park Service tried to keep an easement Pombo had given to a railroad, Pombo led the charge in Congress to write a law about it.

I forget what hacked Pombo off so bad about the Endangered Species Act, but he hates it. He also issn't shy about playing dirty pool.

In Congress, when you want to screw someone over, you name the title of your bill the exact opposite of what it really is. If you want to relax regulations for polluters, you call your bill the Clear Skies Act. When you want to spy on your own citizens, you call it the USA Patriot Act.

And when Pombo wants to rip the enforcement provisions out of ESA, as he does every year, he calls his bill the Threatened and Endangered Species Recovery Act.

He's been tossing this bill up ever since he got his job as Chairman of the House Resources Committee.

Oh, one more thing which should be of no surprise to anybody. Pombo is one of the larger Congressional beneficiaries of Jack Abramoff's dirty money.

It should come as no surprise because the House Resources Committee has jurisdiction over affairs relating to Indian tribes. Anyone familiar with Abramoff understands why Indian tribes are considered to be a resource by Congress.

9. Pombo is a fat corpulent pig
While Pete McClosky is wasted in the outlands of Yolo County. Sic 'em Pete!!! He's one of those pre-Gringrich repiglicans who liked to tell the truth because he believes it's good for the country. :)
