Acting S.F. mayor's power play
"San Francisco Supervisor Chris Daly, in a move some called gutsy and others childish, used his powers as acting mayor Wednesday to appoint two people to the powerful Public Utilities Commission, while Mayor Willie Brown was traveling in Tibet. "

"Daly, who was tapped by Brown to serve as acting mayor for one day Wednesday, said he had been plotting the insurgent appointments for the past few days and had no regrets. "

2. Oh man! Willie is going to eviscerate Daly!!
I'm pretty shocked that Willie even appointed Daly to the position since they've basically hated each other from day 1.

3. That's what I was wondering...
Maybe they do it on a rotation?
What I want to know is why the mayor is in Tibet.
How much is the trip costing the taxpayers?

5. Willie makes lots of trips abroad...
It's to promote SF as a tourist and buisness location. My guess is he was over there to build on SF's strong Chinese ties. In the long run a trip like this should be considered an investment in the city, but he'll probably want to stay a bit closer to home from now on.

What a great photo. And Willie will be gone soon enough. Who will take his place? Voters want to know!

7. The Democrat Machine is behind Newsom
So my guess is that the first election will have Newsom with a plurality (but not a majority). Not sure who'll come up 2nd. Possibly Gonzales. The run-off election will have low LOW voter turnout so really either could win. Just depends on who gets their base out.

9. I think the board decides who's acting mayor...
...and, in that case, the progressive majority would choose someone like Ammiano or Daly. Brown certainly would not do that.

4. I love it!
he had the right, I believe, to appoint people in his position as acting mayor.

Daly and Brown can't stand each other. Such is politics in SF!

11. Haven't made up my mind yet
I know...I know...the election's coming up soon. I'm leaning toward Ammiano or Gonzales. Newsom is pretty, and he's "ok" but I'd prefer someone more to the left. Plus, whoever gets the job next is going to have a miserable time of it. SF's budget is a horrible mess. Something like $350 million in deficit. Eww.
