US Takes the War on Drugs to Canada's Prince of Pot
US takes the war on drugs to Canada's Prince of Pot

Duncan Campbell
Friday September 16, 2005
The Guardian

One of the world's leading cannabis legalisation campaigners, a magazine publisher known as the "Prince of Pot", faces an extradition hearing today in Vancouver as American drugs agencies seek to put him on trial in the US. His supporters claim the move is a first step by US authorities to prosecute foreigners who challenge the US laws on cannabis.

Marc Emery, publisher of Cannabis Culture, faces charges of trafficking in marijuana seeds and money laundering. His supporters have been demonstrating outside Canadian embassies in more than 30 countries during the past week to urge Canada's authorities not to yield to pressure from the US and hand him over, arguing he could face a lifetime in prison if they did so.

<snip>

The main charges he would face in the US are for selling the seeds - considered international drug trafficking. Money laundering charges might be levelled because the profits he makes from the sales are used to promote the legalisation of cannabis.

"I have always been very, very transparent in the way I have conducted a career," Mr Emery said in a message posted about his arrest on his website. "I have often described as 'revolutionary retail' or 'capitalist activism'." He suspected the US authorities wanted to make an example of him.

2. The US authorities say that the action is a joint venture w/ the Canadians

And yet there is no quote from Canadian counterparts. And that's because he is operating and upholding Canadian laws. The US gov has NO jurisdiction there. But that's their problem, they think that they own the world. News Flash: They don't.

On a side note, I would think the US gov would consider legalizing pot in order to sway the declining approval ratings of the boy-king. It's so much better than cake. And when you combine them...

Anyway, even if Emery was a documented sex-crime, serial killer, I would not turn him over to US "justice." I guess that was a bad analogy since in that case he would probably be elevated to a position at Gitmo.

3. I agree ...

They could call it "The Brownie Act". It would also help people forget about the whole FEMA (Mike Brown) Fuck-Up by confusing the two.

4. Is this bit true about the death penalty?
"If I were to be extradited and prosecuted in the US, probably life imprisonment," he said. "Under 'Drug Kingpin' legislation, selling over 60,000 seeds qualifies for the death penalty. I would be the first person under this recent law who could qualify to be executed for the activity I have clearly done with the tacit approval of everyone in Canada."

The death penalty for selling cannabis? Has the USA really gone that crazy?

7. no, it is not true, 30 years to life (not death)
not much of a difference in some ways. My guess is he does about ten, unless he rats out his buyers, which I expect he might do.

13. Now why do you think that?
Do you know Marc personally? Or do you just buy into all the BS back and forth between him and one of his ex suppliers?

8. The worst thing about all of this...
is that there is no "drug" in the seeds that he sent. THC is the drug and there is no THC in seeds. A plant has to actually grow to have THC. So they could according to the law kill him for sending a potential drug. Seeds. Of a plant. Not some Meth lab kind of drug but an herb like oregano and basil. It's so insane.

11. I believe there is some THC in or on seeds
"Studies reported in The Journal of Analytical Toxicology demonstrate that regular users of hemp seed oil may test positive for low levels of THC. This outcome is because trace amounts of THC-bearing flower parts sometimes adhere to the sterile seeds' outer shell. "

12. That clearly states that its debris that contain the trace THC.
Pure hemp seed does not contain any THC or any psychoactive substance.

15. Mark Emery is a man who stands for TRUE freedom
not freedom for big corporate businesses like the alcohol industry, the timber industry, the pharmaceutical industry, or the oil industry - all of which stand to possibly lose money should hemp ever be legalized. Don't kid yourselves - this has nothing to do with drugs - it's all about industries forcing out competition. People should also be free to smoke pot if they want, or not if they don't. THE WAR ON DRUGS IS TOTAL BULLSHIT!

Check out how hemp could solve all our energy problems:

Biodiesel can be made from domestically produced, renewable oilseed crops such as hemp. With over 30 million successful U.S. road miles hemp biodiesel could be the answer to our cry for cheaper fuel. We have spent the last century polluting our beautiful country with our petroleum based fuels that could have easily been replaced with fuels derived from hemp. It would only take 6% of our U.S. land to produce enough hemp, for hemp fuel, to make us energy independent from the rest of the world.
