US Says Turks May Not Deploy to Iraq
WASHINGTON - Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld on Tuesday left open the possibility that Turkey's offer to deploy thousands of troops to Iraq (news - web sites) — a move seen just weeks ago as a critical breakthrough for U.S. diplomacy — could be dropped because of Iraqi opposition.

Now, who didn't see that coming?

3. May I just say: "What an unmitigated clusterfuck."
The incompetence is criminal.

The flower of our loved ones and fellow citizens are in mortal danger over there and these ghouls are toying with their lives (and those of the Iraqis) while they vamp, tapdance and make it up as they go along. :grr:

There's no help, no relief for them anytime soon from anywhere. It's so fucked up it's incredible...

11. tom_paine, it's one of my very favorites too :)
Speaking of Tom Paine, he has tons of good ones as well. One I love from "Common Sense":

"...but the moment the event of (Lexington and Concord) was made known, I rejected the hardened, sullen tempered Pharaoh of England for ever; and disdain the wretch, that with the pretended title of FATHER OF HIS PEOPLE, can unfeelingly hear of their slaughter, and composedly sleep with their blood upon his soul."

Those were big words to hurl at a king in those days.

I'm a native-born American, but my dad emigrated here from France. I've always been called Frenchie or Froggy because of my name, so that's how I chose my nickname (since it currently isn't proper to say "French" in polite company, however, I had to substitute freedom).

Also, I'm not a dude. :)

10. Does anybody besides me get the feeling...
that these guys don't know what they're doing? It's like a soap opera. First, they were hot for Indian troops. After being harassed for months, they finally said a firm 'no'. It was decided that was a goofy idea anyway, to have Hindus watching over Muslims.

The idea was that tanned troops might not be so abrasive as Americans.

Next, off to Turkey. The idea COULD have worked, except the Iraqis themselves don't want it, and it will probably be seen as extremely disruptive, considering the Kurds and the varied muslim groups.

What Keystones. They're just making this up as they go along (or should I say Rums-filled is).

What next? Chinese troops?

Damn Turks don't stay bribed unless you keep paying them.

Too bad for the troops stuck in that hellhole. Somebody close the window please? I feel a draft.
