Opponents of D.C. Antiwar Rally Launch Web Site
Opponents of D.C. Antiwar Rally Launch Web Site

By Petula Dvorak
Washington Post Staff Writer
Saturday, September 10, 2005; Page B02

.....About 2 a.m. yesterday, a coalition of conservative groups launched its official Web site, http://www.supportthetroopsweekend.org , cementing in cyberspace plans for a counter-protest that they hope will rival the antiwar rally planned for Sept. 24.

"We didn't want their rally to go unanswered," said William Greene, president of RightMarch.com, a local conservative organization. "We've been getting interest from thousands and thousands of people. . . . We look forward to standing with other patriotic families, a majority that has been silent in the past."
(snip)

The coalition's activities are about backing the troops abroad and giving a voice to those who support the global war on terror, a war that is "every bit as serious as World War II and the stakes are just as high," said Kristinn Taylor, head of the local chapter of FreeRepublic.com and one of the event's organizers.

At a news conference announcing the events, Greene said that "these are nonpartisan activities." But on the RightMarch.com Web site, Greene had a less-tempered message to supporters: "We've had it with these radicals on the Left and their "poster girl" Cindy Sheehan, who are just encouraging the terrorists, endangering our men and women in uniform, and lowering troop morale with their antics."
(snip/...)

These folks are likely to show up around the fringes of actual events, like the protests against the war before Bush launched it, like the late arrival in Crawford to oppose Cindy Sheehan.

1. More US taxpayers dollars being spent under the guise of
conservative groups. Bet that PR company that was exposed as setting up the faux opposition at Camp Casey is involved in this as well.

9. This fool still thinks he's in the majority?
Doesn't he see those polls that propped up Stupidhead for so long turning against him and his fellow fascisti? Oh well, too bad.

The larger question, of course, is why William Greene isn't satisfied with the ersatz popular march put on by the Pentagon and Washington Times? Seems to me that would be a wonderful opportunity for Mr. Greene and his pals to show us all what their "majority" looks like. But, like a lamprey or an intestinal parasite, they will attach themselves to a larger, more advanced organism in hopes of obtaining sustenance.

Dumbass.

10. I have a question: does anyone think that the protests
will get violent? I'm going regardless, but this is my first such event and I'm coming from Oklahoma. I wonder what to expect, as much as possible, because I have three dogs that are being boarded and I would like to have a contingency plan for them to be taken care of should I get arrested or worse.

Any other buzz on the protest?

32. Unlikely
The DC cops know how to handle these things, and they will go out of their way to keep the lid on. Also, the organizers know that the way to make the biggest impact is with sheer numbers, a shitload of diversity, and artful protests. The challenge has always been to get the flipping media to cover it, but in light of Katrina (Corrina if you are talking to Laura) the media may well start listening to the mood of the nation.

12. I don't know a whole lot about this stuff, but this is interesting:
The registrant phone number was area code 202-555-xxxx. Isn't 555 a bogus exchange? Furthermore, the Intercosmos Media Group, Inc appears to be based out of New Orleans. How are they able to do business right now?

43. That's A Webhost...
I thought the InterNIC name rang a bell. All the info I saw on the "WhoIs" are the contacts of the ISP, not the people fronting this scam.

In fact, the Sigmund name is someone I've been reading blogging from the company's offices...he was hold up in a downtown office building during the flooding and kept the lone New Orleans Internet connection up and going during the worst of the storm and aftermath.

My bets are if we do a bit of digging, we should be able to find a Repugnican PR firm behind this, just like the ones that have staged other sham "protests".

That was the only physical altercation at Crawford. Some morans attacked "Power Ranger" or whaver his name is.

Besides, the organizers are training peacekeepers. I've been trained by a local group. We know what to do.

On the other hand, if it looks like people want to go en masse and clean out the White House and Congress of its vermin, I'll go with the majority!

37. YELLOW ELS--that gives me an idea
What a great way of getting a point across, if one could get the word out...you know how is automatically recognized as the peace sign, would it not be fabulous if the letter L, in yellow, became the universal symbol for chickenhawk Loser yellow elephants! You could put a big yellow L under their windshield wipers, chalk it on sidewalks, tape it to trees....hmmm!

29. Actually, I am anything but worried.
Edited on Sat Sep-10-05 02:40 PM by tomg
The situation is very different from the late sixties/ early seventies. At that time, there was real animosity from and toward law enforcement oficers. It was far more generational in terms of the divide, and the numbers opposed to the government and its policies were nothing compared to what they are now. Agent provocateurs were rampant ( one of the jokes on our campus was that the fastest way to contact the FBI was to find out where the SDS was meeting), and, in all honesty, some people on the violent left were, in fact packing guns. You needed law enforcement willing to beat up people and kids playing revolutionaries needing to respond for the kind of violence that occurred. From what I see, look at how many on DU ( or KOS or any number of progressive boards and communities) are police, fire fighters, military, emts, teachers, doctors, clergy, mayors, vets. Most of the young people are pretty level-headed, and there will be enough older folks who have already had their heads kicked in or been gassed to disabuse whoever might want to mix it up of any romantic notions. The last thing this administration needs or wants is violence.

on edit: Welcome to DU

And remember a small group of them must remain safe in our overwhelming numbers.

Would a small group of us be safe at one of their rallies if we were loud and obnoxious?
