Canada and China sign strategic partnership, discuss human rights

CBC News

In Ottawa Friday, China's President and Canada's Prime Minister announced a formal "strategic partnership" between the two countries, while officials signed a number of bilateral agreements on air and rail transport, food inspection, health research and nuclear R&D.

No mention of anything about natural resources.

Wonder what the "strategic partnership" bit is about?

2. The rest of the world is forming relationships...
and going on about their business without the U.S., 'cause they realize they don't need our approval or dissapproval anymore.

Canada isn't a big enough player to be a strategic partner with. At least in my opinion.

9. Yep
Now that one has established what you are it is sort of "haggling about the price" so to say.

10. um...how about
the second largest oil reserves in the world (when the Alberta tar sands are factored in).
the largest fresh water reserves in the world. (Thought oil wars were bad? wait for it.)
a lengthy border with the United States. (Imagine the US sharing North America with a less accomodating neighbour.)

What the fuck more do you want?

12. Last time I checked, Canada was at least in the top 10
of world economies. They are playing it smart - growing their trade surplus by working more with Europe and other regions, so that when the US economy really tanks, it will be easier for them to ride out the storm. Of course the fact that Canada actually has a strong social infrastructure and budget surplus helps their cause as well.

13. Don't forget physical infrastructure
People complain you can't get around Canadian cities because the streets are always torn up being upgraded.

People complain you can't get around US streets because they're impassable.
