Headline: US soldier, two civilians killed in Iraq -- Detail Story

BAGHDAD: Another US soldier was killed in Iraq on Monday as the United States called on reluctant nations to donate generously to the war-ravaged country at conference this week in Madrid. Two civilians also were killed.

A US soldier was killed and five were wounded in an attack in Fallujah on Monday, a coalition statement said. "At 1:00 pm today in Fallujah, a patrol from the 82nd Airborne Division was attacked," it said. The attack involved an explosive device "followed by small arms fire."

Also, two US soldiers were wounded in an attack on their convoy in Fallujah today and three Iraqis were wounded when the Americans opened fire, witnesses said. The two soldiers were wounded when an explosive device blew up, destroying at least one vehicle, according to Saad Abdel Rahman, a 30-year-old shopkeeper who said he witnessed the attack on the edge of town. He said three Iraqis were wounded when the Americans opened fire after the blast. Several people were arrested following the attack, the witnesses said.

1. How come it's nearly always one US fatality? Not two, three...
At least as far as I've noticed and I've read dozens of reports.

2. Notice that Bremer isn't talking it up anymore about
how nice and stable things are. I think we have seen just about the Last of Bremer.

5. This is obviously the result of the press not highlighting the good
things that have been achieved.

Associated Press

FALLUJAH, Iraq -- Iraq's hit-and-run resistance struck U.S. forces in this tense city west of Baghdad for a second day yesterday, killing one American paratrooper and wounding six others, the U.S. command reported.

Two civilians were killed in the clash, including one whose family said he was shot by the Americans after they detained and handcuffed him. The Pentagon said it had no information on the claim, and U.S. military spokesmen in Iraq had no immediate comment.

Fallujah is among the most dangerous cities for American troops in the "Sunni Triangle" to the north and west of Baghdad, where resistance to the U.S. occupation is most intense.

Early today, the U.S. military said coalition troops and Iraqi security forces were "taking action against criminal elements" in Karbala, the city where an American lieutenant colonel was killed in a firefight outside the home of a Shi'a Muslim cleric on Thursday. The lieutenant colonel was the highest-ranking officer killed since the war began in March.

The bodies of the two civilians killed in yesterday's attack – an Iraqi and a Syrian truck driver – were taken to Fallujah General Hospital. The Associated Press saw that one of them, Iraqi Nazem Baji, had a gunshot wound in the back of his head and his hands were tied in front of him with plastic bands similar to those used by the U.S. military when they arrest suspects.

"They (Americans) raided the house, shot him first in the leg, tied his hands and then shot him in the head," said the victim's brother, Dira'a Baji. Baji said his brother was the only male in the house when the Americans came but that several women relatives were present and described what happened. None of the women was at the hospital.
