Barbara Bush: Things Working Out "Very Well" for Poor Evacuees from New Orleans

By E&P Staff

Published: September 05, 2005 7:25 PM ET

(snip)

In a segment at the top of the show on the surge of evacuees to the Texas city, Barbara Bush said: "Almost everyone I’ve talked to wants to move to Houston."

Then she added: "What I’m hearing is they all want to stay in Texas. Everyone is so overwhelmed with the hospitality.

"And so many of the people in the arena here, you know, were underprivileged anyway so this (she chuckled)--this is working very well for them."

1. erm...what was it John Connally's wife said to JFK
just before he was assassinated? "You can't say Texas doesn't love you". Guess they just have a funny way of showing it.

Aren't they cutting checks for immediate living expenses within about a week?

Why is it all they are offering Katrina's victims is a cot.

The chuckle is the wink and nod to the conservatives: get with the program. She is saying the party line is that the poor folk don't know any better than to let a disaster happen to them and the hidden agenda is the "welfare queens" meme.

121. That little chuckle reveals her genuine position.
She was truly speaking from the heart, from the gut, off the cuff. And she actually believes that these poor folks want to stay in Texas and that they actually have it better off now than they ever had it in their shacks back in the big easy!

That little chuckle proves that she actually thinks her comments were showing compassion and empathy -- and THAT is the scariest part of it all.

Gee, Barb, did the poor cause the hurricane on purpose
so that they could live on bleachers?

This is class warfare. They let us know every day that it's class warfare, with example after example.

It's so endearing to hear Barbara Bush chuckling at the poor whose lives have been hell on earth for a week.

43. Shame Game: calling all you white librel femi-nazis
Dear (Ms.) Barbara Bush:

I have so admired you from the time when you were First Lady. You were so quietly supportive and very obviously your son George has profited from the kind attentions you gave him as a youth. I was saddened to find out that he one time had a drinking problem but the Lord has a way of taking care of his own. I understand that Dr. Billy Graham converted him and if that isn't a conversion, then nothing is.

I was wondering if you thought it appropriate to advance this notion of 'morning after' pill for the poor black people in New Orleans who find themselves caught up in such unfortunate circumstance. We don't need any more people to have to transport should there be another flood.

Sincerely,
White Texas cracker and admirer

She laughed about it. What is humorous about death and destruction? What is humorous about being shipped out to live in an arena for who knows how long? She raised her son. Is it any wonder the people of New Orleans were thrown to the wolves?

..."And so many of the people in the arena here, you know, were underprivileged anyway so this (she chuckled)--this is working very well for them."...

How utterly, appallingly inhuman and inhumane she is. I am at a loss for words.

BUSH MOM: EVERYONE WANTS TO MOVE TO TEXAS
Mon Sep 05 2005 19:52:02 ET

Former first lady and mother to President Bush said Monday that evacuees from New Orleans have found a home in Houston.

"Almost everyone I’ve talked to says we're going to move to Houston," Barbara Bush told NPR.

"What I’m hearing is they all want to stay in Texas. Everyone is so overwhelmed by the hospitality.

"And so many of the people in the arena here, you know, were underprivileged anyway, so this --this is working very well for them."

Editor & Publisher notes the former First Lady's remarks were aired this evening on National Public Radio's "Marketplace" program.

Edited on Mon Sep-05-05 09:30 PM by Dudley_DUright
It is worse than we thought, if you can even imagine that is possible. Here is the complete quote:

What I'm hearing which is sort of scary is that they all want to stay in Texas. Everybody is so overhwlemed by the hospitality. And so many of the people in the arena here, you know, were underprivileged anyway so this (chuckle)--this is working very well for them.

Secondly, I hope every single one of them stays in Texas if it scares her. She scares me.

119. Maybe it's sort of scary for her....
that a good deal of these new settlers in Texas are going to be voting HEAVILY DEMOCRATIC next election since they have been screwed (with no lubricant) by this administration! (Or voting for the first time AGAINST Republicans if they have never voted before...)

What's the matter Babs? A little nervous Junior might lose his "home" state?

We need to get our butts busy getting these folks registered to vote the next few months, sweeping Rick Perry, Dewhurst, Craddick, DeLay, and all of Chimpy's other minions out of state government, and getting Texas back where it was in the good ole days.

Another bummer for Babs--if any of these folks had felony records, they will still be able to vote. Texas is one fo the states that allows folks to vote as long as they have fulfilled all the conditions of their sentence and parole.

My brother lives in Texas, and believe me, the evacuees would be much better off somewhere else. Texas doesn't take care of its people. I wonder if Bush had some contracting deals in texas to take care of everyone, and that's why they sent them there.

I said he was the wisest and most compassionate out of all of them referring to the Bush family. And I also said that was a sad thing. There's no need to educate me on how GHWB was not much of a human being as well for future reference.

Barbara Bush: Relocation 'working very well' for poor

Tuesday, September 6, 2005; Posted: 7:29 a.m. EDT (11:29 GMT)

Former President George Bush and his wife, Barbara, visit evacuees in Houston on Monday.

HOUSTON, Texas (AP) -- Former Presidents Bush and Clinton got smiles, hugs and requests for autographs when they met with refugees from Hurricane Katrina -- but it was Bush's wife who got attention for some of her comments.

Barbara Bush, who accompanied the former presidents on a tour of the Astrodome complex Monday, said the relocation to Houston is "working very well" for some of the poor people forced out of New Orleans.

"What I'm hearing, which is sort of scary, is they all want to stay in Texas. Everyone is so overwhelmed by the hospitality," she said during a radio interview with the American Public Media program "Marketplace." "And so many of the people in the arena here, you know, were underprivileged anyway, so this is working very well for them."

102. Why should it be "scary" if some stay in Texas?
Some will--& not just the "underprivileged." Big Houston has often been the first stop for Louisianans looking for better jobs.

A friend was just wondering how many restaurants will open serving Creole and/or Cajun food. We already have some--a few more would be fine. (& she belongs to a church that has been serving the poor for years--she was not being unfeeling.)

125. Because an influx of "you know, underprivileged" people would upset
the gerrymandered applecart of Texas politics. They laid the districts out carefully with an eye to keeping them red. Toss in voters who can't be very happy with this admin and Texas could turn blue overnight.

Texas goes blue next fall and * might be staring the "I" word in the face. That's the only thing I can think of that would scare someone who actually had Chimpy INSIDE them.

Edited on Tue Sep-06-05 09:22 AM by Justitia
IGNORE THE REPUBLICANS!!! (The Bushes & our idiot GOV)

The overwhelming sentiment in the CITIES of TX, and their DEM MAYORS (Houston, San Antonio, Dallas), is we want LA residents to feel very welcome here and to stay permanently if they so desire.

We will welcome them as permanent Texans or we will help them to ultimately return to LA.

We are a very big state, open to EVERYONE, and we have plenty of opportunity and space for them all.

Please, please, ignore these repug idiots that are saying these things - IT IS NOT A REFLECTION OF THE OVERWHELMING SENTIMENT OF A MAJORITY OF TEXANS, especially in the cities that are hosting our LA guests.

You'd have to be here to see it, but it is really something the way Houstonians (except for the freaking Bushes) are welcoming and caring for them. I've never seen anything like it in all my life in Texas.

BTW - She is saying that (they want to stay permanently) because she is hearing comments in response to the warm welcome and care LA residents are receiving. We are doing our best for them, we convey our desire for them to stay, and many are considering it.

edit to add: The Bushes themselves are not very welcome in Houston. They NEVER come out in public. On election day, they were BOOED AT THEIR POLLING PRECINCT and had to be whisked out of there in their humongous SUV in a hurry!

113. I'm very proud of Houston
and I've never been there. But the generosity of Houston and its people has been one of the few bright spots for me.

I think what people are objecting to is Babs' insinuation that LA people hit the lottery when Katrina destroyed their homes, drowned their families and friends and took away everything they had. Well, they lived in squalor anyway, so living in an arena is a step up for them -- aren't they a bunch of lucky-duckies? That is the sense I get here.

If you happen to run into a Houston official, tell them this Indiana resident is damned proud they are an American city. I'd email the mayor if I could, but don't know how to reach them.

Barbara Bush and her diarrhea of the mouth are nothing but an embarrassment.
She hasn't been in Houston for months and never ventures out amongst the citizens of Houston anyway, so what does she know?

Our mayors are knocking themselves out to provide for our new residents as are our school board superintendents, city councils, etc., etc.

And our citizens have been amazing.

If anyone would like to send a note of support to the dem mayors of 3 of our largest cities housing flood victims, below are links.

They could use some moral support in the face of our idiot repug governor and idiot repug legislature (who will probably not make it easy for them):
