Two pipelines that supply the Southeast with gasoline resumed partial operations on Thursday, allowing some gas stations in the Metro Atlanta area to refuel.

A panic caused by false rumors that the governor would shut down all of the state's gas stations or ration gas starting Wednesday afternoon caused a rush of people to the pumps.

By Thursday, dozens of gas stations had been forced to shut down because they had run out of gas. The picture brightened for others, such as a station on Clairmont Road that reduced its price for a gallon of gas from $3.99 to $2.99 after receiving a new shipment Thursday.

The problem started when Hurricane Katrina knocked out power to two pipelines -- the Colonial Pipeline and the Plantation Pipeline -- that feed fuel to Georgia. Both lines were running at 25 percent capacity on Thursday and could be back to normal by next week.
