Bush stumbles over name of Myanmar's detained Nobel peace laureate
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/afp/20031019/wl_asia_afp/apec_us_myanmar_bush_031019083844

BANGKOK (AFP) - Nobel peace laureate Aung San Suu Kyi has irritated Myanmar's military government for years but it was her polysyllabic name, not her outspoken political views, that flummoxed US President George W. Bush (news - web sites) here.

The president, known for his malaprops, mispronunciations and use of questionable syntax, tripped twice in the same sentence Sunday over the detained opposition leader's name as he repeated Washington's demands for the junta to release her.

"We care deeply about Aung Suu San Kyi and the status of Aung Suu San Kyi," he said, transposing the pro-democracy advocate's second and third names in comments to reporters after meeting Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

The inadvertent flub drew chuckles from reporters in the White House filing center and one veteran correspondent was overheard to say: "At least he got all four syllables in."

1. is the ability to count a plus?
"At least he got all four syllables in."

He's good at syllable counts. He always manages to use three syllables when he says "nucular."

4. i don't think he's known for
the "malaprops, mispronunciations and use of questionable syntax" because as usual "the slip-up did not make it onto the official transcript which was issued later by the White House with the name set out correctly"

3. Until this thread, I had only heard her name on the radio
...and never read it. I always had trouble recalling it and saying it when talking to my friends.
Champs D'Ellyses does not flow off my tongue very easily, either. My mother never could say Buena Vista.

6. You probably had less vital reasons to speak her name
Most politicians and diplomats practice saying a difficult name that they know they will need to use in diplomatic circumstances. Most world leaders follow issues like this closely enough that they become familiar with unusual names. I'm sure that Condi attempted to train george, but this monkey doesn't learn easily.

20. agreed
I always think of her as Aung San Suu Chi, but that maybe because I usually hear her name spoken and superimpose my own transliteration, or because unlike George Kerwal Bush I don't have a mess of advisors to brief my on my day's planned events.

Hmmm, "mess of advisors". I like that. It explains a lot.

8. Repetition
His handlers should have forced him to say this over and over. Wasn't he reading it? I suppose they had it spelled out phonetically for him.

What a disgrace! And, being a weekend, this will go the way of so many other things. Sigh...

13. Perhaps Bush doesn't like to give her much thought
Aung San Suu Kyi is the rightfully elected President of her nation. He may not want to think about that or want to come down too hard on those who illegally hold power in her place.

I can't believe I didn't see the comparison! Another great example of why (and when) * has difficulty with the language that backs up the points Mark Crispin Miller made in The Bush Dyslexicon.

16. a lot of it is caused by heavy drinking/drugging and prescription
pill popping....bush* has openly admitted being a HEAVY drinker until he was 45 years old...bush* won't answer questions about his noted cocaine use, which caused him not to show up for his pilot physical in the ANG and desert the military....

now, it looks likes bush* is on lots of prescription drugs, like rush...so what else can people expect...years of drugs/alcohol mess up your brain to the point of no recovery...'malpropisms, mispronunciations and use of questionable syntax' is another way of saying "drug/alcohol damaged brain"

all those ferrin' names start soundin' the same, don't they George?

Seriously, I can forgive him this one - Asian names can be difficult to remember. I know I often have a hard time with them. 'Course I'm not the President of the Uneted States, either.

27. We know when Bush* is being insincere when...
he stammers, grammatically mangles and "malaprops" his way through a statement/speech. Translation: he doesn't care deeply about Aung San Suu Kyi - at all. Are not the people of Myanmar eligible for "liberation" too?

What an embarrassment.
