Group seeks to repeal law granting licenses to illegal immigrants
Saturday, October 18, 2003

(10-18) 08:57 PDT LOS ANGELES (AP) --
A group of Republicans active in the recall of Gov. Gray Davis is now setting it sights on overturning a controversial law granting drivers licenses to illegal immigrants that Davis signed during the recall campaign.
Gov.-elect Arnold Schwarzenegger, who was elected to replace Davis, promised to work to repeal the law if elected. But the conservative California Republican Assembly, not willing to wait for that, launched a petition drive two weeks ago to put the matter before voters in the March election.
The group, which must collect 375,000 voter signatures by Dec. 7, says it has gathered nearly 40,000 so far.

Well the conservative corporate farmers who want to keep illegals a murky issue support the license ban?

Get over it? I don't think so.

3. Gray Davis biggest mistake was signing this legislation
that he had vetoed earlier. The poll numbers had been inching upwards against the recall, but they turned South right after Davis signed the bill.

Illegal immigration hurts legal immigration!

This is a bad law that should be repealed!

4. I think they should have driver's licenses
If you are going to drive in California, you have
to be registered at the DMV; take a test, pass it
and get insurance. That's more than what's happening
now with non-citizens driving illegally or with
fake licenses.
These people are being employed here and they pay
taxes on what they earn.
Maybe driver's licenses shouldn't be the only ID
anymore for a citizen. Or maybe the driver's license
has an emblem on it that signifies they are not
yet citizens.
There are plenty of European "illegal aliens" living
and working in CA (including Ahnold at one time)
but no one seems to be jumping up and down about
them.
It's because the "illegal aliens" are brown.

I doubt Gray was defeated because of this one issue...
the media at every turn poor mouthed him without
talking about the other very progressive bills and
legislation he's signed. You won't see that from
Pete Wilson Lite and in fact, we'll see some of this
stuff rolled back.

6. Many Latinos opposed this bill
like I said repeatedly, illegal immigration hurts legal immigrants. In addition, this bill creates a major national security problem. If we were speaking of Arab immigrants it wouldn't be an issue.

Bustamante was the only candidate with a credible plan to bring California out of its financial woes. Neither Davis, and certainly not Arnold, had a clue as to what to do. Arnold in particular, would turn the state to the same people that created the problem in the first place.

7. Really? Davis had a clue..it was the same CLUE Pete Wilson had and DID
use: a temporary one cent sales tax to be repealed once the debt was eliminated.

Please explain how a bill that actually IDENTIFIES people by getting their name, address, and picture creates a security issue? Also, undocumented aliens got drivers license up until the time prop 187 passed.

8. The problem is...
that the illegal immigrants can use this I.D. Card they get from the consulate as a proof of identification. This card is not based on their birth certificate or Passport. It says this person is who he says he is, by his word only. Kind of a easy way to generate a bona fide I.D. (the CA driver's license).

The Driver's license or State ID cards are what is used by banks and other legal institutions to verify identity. What is the problem? They are here illegally. They should be sent back to where they come from. Go through the process, enter legally, and then get an I-551 (Green Card). Then get the license. Or, since we have NAFTA, get a Mexican or International Driver's License.

This opens a hole a mile high and wide for foreign agents to enter the U.S. and obtain valid I.D. We cannot allow this now.

9. No the real problem is not addressing the problem of illegal workers
Edited on Sun Oct-19-03 02:15 AM by joefree1
We have a leaky border and under funded border patrols for one reason; the corporate farms and sweatshops need illegal labor. They want cheap labor and they don't want to provide any benefits. These wicked greedy folk don't want any laws that might legitimize foreign workers.

And what a convenient issue when neo-cons want to play the race card without being too obvious.

Does anyone here really think we can do without foreign workers doing all the nasty jobs the citizens of the USA won't. What a red herring!

Giving illegals a driving license is a skimpy bandaid on bad situation. The corporations want the illegals here. I want them to be register with the government any way we can.

11. Undocumented workers are a significant presence in California.
They man the fast food joints; bus tables and wash dishes in restaurants; clean houses, hotel rooms, and office buildings; pick fruit and vegetables on vast corporate farms; work on construction sites; paint homes; cut lawns; babysit.....the list goes on and on. For the most part these people are hard-working and here to make money to provide for their families. A lot of the work they are willing to do is the heavy-duty backbreaking stuff like clearing a hillside or digging a 6 foot trench in hundred degree weather -- as I witnessed in my own neighborhood not long ago. These people aren't going away. If we are more than willing to put them to work, we should be more than willing to insist that they be legally licensed to drive if they choose to do so.
