Cheney: Americans have accepted terrorism challenge
Associated Press

Americans have accepted the challenge to combat terrorism and one day scholars and historians will look back upon the courage and determination the nation has shown, Vice President Dick Cheney said tonight.

"The world is depending on the United States of America," Cheney told those who paid $750 a plate to attend an anniversary celebration to raise money for the James A. Baker III Institute for Public Policy at Rice University. "Sometimes history presents clear and stark choices. We have come to such a time. ... We accept the great mission that history has given us."

Cheney said the war on terrorism, which began for the United States on Sept. 11, 2001, began years earlier for those who wished to harm America.

"We must do everything in our power to prevent terrorists from ever acquiring weapons of mass destruction," he told the black-tie crowd which dined on quail, lobster and tenderloin. "America requires a new strategy. A good defense is not enough."

Cheney scare the hell outta me! Look at this quote
"A good defense is not enough."

What that means is US is taking the Offensive and Premptive strikes are the Cheney WAY! :bounce:

I don't even think Baker really agrees with him but he does fear him :bounce:

The experimental and unproven(some would say...DEMONIC!!!) medical procedures that are being used on him to keep him alive?

Probably costs enough to supply free health care, for life, to everyone on DU.

As Michael Ledeen said, "If we just let our own vision of the world go forth, and we embrace it entirely and we don't try to be clever and piece together clever diplomatic solutions to this thing, but just wage a total war against these tyrants, I think we will do very well and our children will sing great songs about us years from now."

11. The new theme: "Americans ain't chicken."
Edited on Fri Oct-17-03 11:41 PM by gulliver
Bush hit on this too with his "Americans aren't the running kind" claptrap.

Americans aren't the running kind, and they aren't stupid either. The first rule of fighting is to fight only as a last resort. Bush and Cheney broke that rule. They fought as a first resort and it was a world class f-up. The wrong fight. A hugely expensive fight. And no good reason.

And two Vietnam chickenhawks, Bush and Cheney, now find the gall to prod Americans on their courage and honor.

How repugnant.

13. __ I say "BullPuckey" - - that's the polite version for "Bullsh_t"

. . The USA is going to be remembered for starting the war of all wars

Granted, there needs to be an effort to combat Terrorism, but it comes as no suprize that the USA is just using it to advance their own adgenda, and I think alot of the world sees through that facade

You don't have to be a brain surgeon to realize that alot of the world HATES the USA, and the rest of us are just sort of plain disgusted with the USA's antics

Put me in the "disgusted" group

After all their support of the NRA and all of the money the PNC threw toward Rush and the Free Republic, I don't see where their words will deflect a fifty-cent bullet when the Right decides to take action once they realize they've been used and badly.

Not my words, theirs:

OFFENSE! OFFENSE! OFFENSE!

it's a good time for us to be on the offensive, and that's being proven by the wide acceptance of Dean and Clark and Kucinich and everyone else who is brave and tough enough to get out there and point out what a dangerous bunch of goons have highjacked our country.

19. Cheney
The fact that a lying, cowardly, corrupt person like Dick Cheney has a position of leadership in America is definitive proof that something is deeply wrong with our political system.

Cheney is at the very center of all that is rotten in the Bush administration, the lies used to justify invasion, the Plame scandal, secrecy, the oil industry influence, ruining the environment, blatant profiteering from war, and so on.

The man has zero credibility, no charisma, and obvious contempt for the American people and for facts.

I just cannot figure out why he isn't held accountable, ever.

20. When are they going to get off it?
It was laughable for a week or two, watching them continue to lie when we knew they were busted. Now it is pathological, I honestly think they are starting to believe the lies they are spewing! I really wish they would get off the "Terrorists want to harm Americans" because we are freedom loving people. Does anybody know how much bullshit that is???????? Terrorists want us out of the middle east! They don't give a shit how short our skirts are! I highly doubt History will look favorably on this administration. When my children are old enough to understand, they won't. That goes for any of their friends who enter our house. I will indoctrinate all of them. Just doing my part.

22. I don't think they will be as successful selling the bogus war on
terrorism as they were selling the bogus wars on communism and drugs. Just an excuse for stealing other countries resources and for selling armaments.

War on terrorism is the most ridiculous ever. If Americans would put their thinking caps on for even ten minutes, they would realize it is impossible to wage war against a warring technique and that bombing will ALWAYS increase the numbers of people wanting to retaliate against you.

But, but, but...the World Series is on...much more important.

25. Excellent post, Gulliver
my thoughts exactly. I think the most heinous, sinister thing about what these people have done, is they have taken every good asset in this country, and they used it to their advantage.

For example, they played their patriotism card early on, in the early stages of the war. They know Americans are patriotic, and they exploited it. Many people in my office started wearing American flag clothes, and they hung little flags. Don't agree with this war? That means you're not patriotic!

Next, they used our sympathy for women, and vulnerability, all in one package. Enter Jessica Lynch, the femme du jour and saving grace for the war planners.

We've seen their blatant use of national symbols and monuments. Bush & Mt. Rushmore, Colon in front of the Washington monument, his face turned upward with a hopeful, dreamy look.

Of course, they have maxxed out their Fear Card. Witness the latest tape of Bin Laden. Mixed reactions, mostly lots of yawning.

These people have taken EVERY ASSET the US has, not only monetary but emotional & spiritual, and RAN THEM INTO THE GROUND.

And this confirms my belief that Americans, and only Americans can correct this situation.

45. He is the fourth branch of government

Cheney answers to no one.

Rice, Powell, Rumsfeld, Ashcroft, etc. can all be called before Congress to answer questions in a process known as checks and balances.

Cheney answers to no one.

Cheney can't even be fired by Bush himself. Cheney is not a cabinet officer and he is not administered by Bush.

Cheney took an elected position and turned it into the fourth branch of government.

This is what a Constitutional crisis looks like.
