UCI shuts down doughnut sale, free speech imperiled (College Repugs)
Edited on Fri Oct-17-03 02:32 PM by Billy_Pilgrim
http://www.ocweekly.com/ink/04/07/news-arellano.php
<snip>
You could look at Bush and join Arnold for free. But the doughnuts? The GOP students offered them for sale, based on the buyer’s race and gender: white and Asian males were charged a buck, Hispanic hombres had to fork over 75 cents, while Native American females received the best price–a dime.

Designed to dramatize the unfairness of affirmative-action programs, the gimmick was a fiscal failure–according to UCI College Republican president Bryan Zuetel, the club made only $12. But the booth was rockin’ throughout the warm Thursday afternoon. Passing students began haranguing the six College Republicans running the booth, apparently offended by the spoof. Soon, dean of students Sally Peterson swooped in like a health-department worker on a bad burger joint and ordered the doughnut sale stopped. According to Peterson, the sale violated the University of California student code of conduct prohibiting discrimination.

"If they were giving the donuts away for free and left the sign up with the discriminatory prices as a political point, I wouldn’t have had a problem," Peterson says. "But because they were engaged in an act of selling and were making a profit, that made it different."
<snip>

The mock bake sale has become a standard of conservative student activism. The first event took place at the University of New Mexico in February 2002. Other campus Republican clubs across the country soon staged similar pastry protests–at UCLA, Stanford, UC Berkeley, even UCI, which held a spring quarter bake sale earlier this year without incident. Vigorous debate greeted each event. The UCLA incident incensed California Democratic Party chairman Art Torres so much that he demanded an apology from the university’s Republican club. He didn’t get his apology, and the sale continued without administrative harassment.
<snip>

Just on CNN, the organization of PAID College Repug organizers seems to be a on the same lines as beer commercials: Get 'em young, you got 'em for life. In googling news articles, I found volumes...

It happened at Washington last week. It's clearly orchestrated.

4. I didn't realize how serious this situation is until I caught a blurb on
CNN. The ramifications here are serious and frightening. Couple this with idea of polling pofs for political ideaology to assure as many conservative as liberal profs... And all FUNDED BY THE RNC or like minded orgs.

This is a pretty blatant underhanded continuing grab that can only be attributed to a conspiracy of a magnitude I haven't imagined before. Gotta get more tin foil.

Sorry for the language, but seeing things like this really steams me. No wonder we're in the clutches of a conservative takeover. They've been working at this for awhile - and our guys have done NOTHING!!!!!!!!

25. my idea
sell some baked good at the designated price and when they purchase it have some corresponding fact or tidbit. throw in some role playing. for the black male price "arrest" half. for hispanics and chicanos demand that "they speak english". for women's price aske them if they are married, pregnant, or planning to get pregnant or their typing speed.

the white male price gets their cookie unharrassed.

What do we do? The only thing I can think of is follow the leader at this pint. Like the Repugs, hire a bunch of insoired "healthy" college age girls to canvas college and university campuses nationwide.

It sucks, but the country can't afford not to.

Held by the "Young Conservatives of Texas." The same outfit that is trying to put together a "campus watch" organization to harass and intimidate professors.

To be fair, the university did shut down the 2 jackasses running their squalid little sale in less than an hour.

3. I Think That....
...maybe some of these young college Republicans should head to their nearest US military recruiting office. Once they get to basic training
they will find that their is no affirmative action, and it gets better when you get sent to a combat zone.

But from what I've seen personally most young college Republicans don't have the guts to enlist in the military. I don't really think that they would actually serve their country, or be willing to make a sacrifice for it. They love the freedom as long as someone else dies to keep them free. Given a choice the ones that I have met would become collaborators if the same thing was happening here in the US that is happening in Iraq.

This of course is from my own personal contacts.

9. No Affirmative Action Might Suck Too
Affirmative action has its merits if employed the way it was intended to be. Without it Clarence Thomas would not be where he is today, okay that was a bad example.

Affirmative action comes in many forms, such as what was being done by the college in Michigan, then there is the legacy form, which allowed a low achiever like Shrub to go to a top level Ivy League college after being rejected by a Texas public university law school.

Minorities and women are not charged less for anything, but many times, due to redlining by realtors and lenders, and geographic price discrimination, pay more!

This isn't affirmative action. What they are doing is lying.

The poster did not say it was the same thing as the purges, he said it reminded it reminded him (or her, sorry) of the WARMUPS to the purges. Are you such an expert on the purges that you can unequivocably state that this sort of innocuous appearing act is laughable compared to the way the purges first started?

Perhaps you can enlighten us as to how the very first vestiges of the purges manifested themselves, so we can all laugh at the poster together for his/her stupidity? That would be fun...

Since some of the same people holding these bake sales are also attempting to start a Daniel Pipes-esque "Professor Watch" to surveill and intimidate UT professors as detailed here: http://www.dailytexanonline.com/main.cfm?include=detail&storyid=530117. So maybe these aren't Nazi university purges. Yet. They are still part of larger social and political trends that people rightfully find disturbing.

20. If they are going to do the bake sale,
they need to do it accurately.

Whites get a break on the price.

Blacks are banned from the sales counter. If blacks approach the sales counter, they will be assaulted with fire hoses and attack dogs. If they persist in their 'uppity' insistence on being served, they will be dragged from their homes in the middle of the night, whipped bloody and then hanged.

Mexican-Americans are in the kitchen, baking the goodies under unsafe conditions, contemptuous employers, and earning 7 cents an hour.

Native Americans had their homes on the site where the kitchen and sales counter now stand. They were shoved off the land by the whites and murdered if they protested. The whites then built the kitchen and sales counter.

Actually, Chinese and Irish-Americans did the building, under miserable, dangerous conditions, poor food, worse pay, and a shallow grave if they died of overwork.

Jewish-Americans were allowed to approach the counter until their big noses and funny accents gave them away, after which they were coldly and rudely refused service. The Jewish-Americans then built their own kitchen and bake sale store, which was promptly vandalized, and then burned to the ground by the white owners of the original bake-sale counter.

Arab-Americans approached the sales counter, looking for some goodies, when they were immediately arrested by forces of John Ashcroft's Ministry of Reich Security. If they were Ay-Rabbs, hanging out at a white establishment, they could only be planning a 'terrist' attack. They were thrown into the concentration camp at Gitmo, and held without charge or advise of counsel.

There. I guess that's the bake-sale the College Repukes really want. It's historically accurate, after all.

Look, they had a total of $12 in income. Hopefully they're not business majors.

There were 150 other student organizations with booths. It makes more sense to counter their bullshit with a booth offering real information about affirmative action.

Let the sun shine on these young repukes and let them bask in their ignorance. This is a college environment, let them work it out. The publicity has the effect of making them even more hard core in their beliefs. I'll bet after being confronted by their peers a few might even see the light.

It's not the stupidity of their analogy that bothers me. It's the fact that they are organised on a national level with funding.

Dems are leaving it up to the individual and waiting for maturity and experience to lead the way to Democratic organizations. If we don't pay attention to this, we're going to go the way of the Do-Do bird.

I remember a time (the late 80s) when feminist groups did the exact same thing to call attention to the disparity in wages.

And the ones who had no sense of humor about it, even going so far as to make comparisons to Nazis, were...wait for it...Repukes.

Now, don't get me wrong. I have no sympathy for these assholes. They are apparently trying to spin our old tactic into a defense of white male privilege, which makes it doubly contepmtible (sp?). However,
*they are not oppressing anybody by doing this*.

And if we harass and intimidate them for it, we're no better than they are.

So, having just defended the wingnuts' freedom of speech, I will now take a shower. Ta!

If I were going to hold one of my own, I'd give it a similar price structure to illustrate that the white males are priviliged in society and can therefore afford to pay more. I wonder if having a coughing fit and perhaps hacking up a lugie that hits their cookey plate would affect anything. Then make a loud apology and do it again.

when I was young...NOBODY would even think of putting up such a display of ignorance and racism....not that racism didn't and still does exist, but just that it takes real arrogance to put yourself in peril displaying such racism...even the KKK hide under sheets...

thanks for your BRILLIANT idea...and if today's young students STOOD UP to this crap, and put their minds to creative solutions, then I am certain this could be stopped immediately....the current tolerance for this on our college campuses is very disturbing...us older people cannot help young people, because they must STAND UP and do it themselves....(if that happened at the University of Michigan in 1969, the whole cookie booth would likely go down in flames quick, just like the ROTC building did....young students in those days had no tolerance for this, and FOUGHT to make U of M the proud leader of diversity that it is today...)

54. More Successful GOP Outreach
With stunts like the SMU bake sale by the Young Conservatives of Texas and the College Republicans'donut incident at UCI, the gradient for uphill battle for the GOP to expand their voter base from white suburbanites to other parts of the electorate has just gone from twelve percent to at least thirty three.

As a Democratic partisan, all I can say is "Keep up the good work, guys, you're going another Pete Wilson." <g>

57. How about this,
If you are white and from a good educational background you get one donut for the price of one. If you father attended the school you get two donuts for the price of one. If you attended a prep school and your parent is an alum you get three donuts and a coffee. If you are good at football you can have as many donuts as you want at no charge.

Now if you are African-American and received your primary education at public school don’t even walk up to the table there are no donuts for you. If you are African-American and were fortunate enough to get a good education, you may have your two-for-one donuts under the same system that allowed the legacy kid to get his two-for-one, the difference is it is fair for him to get the extra donut, but not for you, you didn’t “earn it.”
