'Vanity Fair' Rips Media 'Conspiracy' in Covering Up Role in Plame Scandal

NEW YORK In an article in the September issue of Vanity Fair (not yet online), Michael Wolff, in probing the Plame/CIA leak scandal, rips those in the news media -- principally Time magazine and The New York Times -- who knew that Karl Rove was one of the leakers but refused to expose what would have been “one of the biggest stories of the Bush years.” Not only that, “they helped cover it up.” You might say, he adds, they “became part of a conspiracy.”

If they had burned this unworthy source and exposed his “crime,” he adds, it would have been “of such consequences that it might, reasonably, have presaged the defeat of the president, might have even -- to be slightly melodramatic -- altered the course of the war in Iraq.” In doing so they showed they owed their greatest allegiance to the source, not their readers.

And their source was no Deep Throat, not someone with dirt on the government -- the source “was the government.”

So in the end, he concludes, “the greatest news organizations in the land had a story about a potential crime that reached as close as you can get to the president himself and they punted, they swallowed it, they self-dealt.” And why did they do it? Well, “a source is a source who, unrevealed, will continue to be a source.”

3. I wonder if this presages a line Fitzgerald will take.
I hope it's merely one criminal perspective he brings forth in indictments, including a criminal contempt charge against Judith Miller and the NYTimes.

11. I mean I don't regard Judith Miller's (or Novak's) behavior ...
Edited on Fri Aug-12-05 10:49 AM by TahitiNut
... as falling within the purview of "the press" or "journalism." It's my hope (and expectation) that Fitzgerald will bring indictments for criminal conspiracy. Both Novak and Miller are conspirators in perpetrating a fraud (fraudulent casus belli) and exposing critical intelligence assets that were the source of information that contradicted the fraudulent 'intelligence'.

This affair is really about one thing: a deliberate hoax on the American People and Members of Congress. Sources of intelligence that served to expose this fraud were associated with Plame's covert activities that gathered valid intelligence contrary to the Chalabi/PNAC disinformation campaign (that included 'Curveball' and the Niger counterfeits).

19. NYT's "greatest allegiance to the source"--better yet, to their politics.
And I'll go one step further. Their readers were not just undervalued as elements of the media culture, they were the medium by which the newspapers carried out their own politics and their crimes.

In the end, Bushco and Republicans aren't really in charge here. Corporate America runs our country. Politics and the Media are simply the means of carrying out their plan. Voters/news-wactchers are merely pawns and inconveniences at this point.

20. I agree. BushCo is merely a suppurating lesion on the body politic.
The underlying infection and corruption is far more deeply-rooted and extensive, involving global corporatists and 'ownership' agents (i.e. investment banks, etc.) indistinguishable from fascists and neo-imperialists.

24. Very astute. So, the crux will be arrived at once we know
the level to which Fitzgerald is taking this. I just hope that his sense of duty to his country will require him to follow this case to wherever its terminus lies - chips falling where they may...

Here you have it, the NYT and Time are the "ACTIVE" enemy of the average America.

10. Alot of people tend to...
...turn their noses up a Vanity Fair thinking that it's all fluff because they always put celebrities on the cover. I always look past the cover to see what the articles are about. There's often excellent stuff in there and I will definitely be buying this issue.

13. I subscribed to Vanity Fair last year after their editor
ripped Fox News a new one about the war.

I have been pleased with every issue I have received so far, and this month is no exception. There's also a good article this month about Sibel Edmonds that I am still trying to wade through and understand.

Vanity Fair is one of the few media sources telling the truth these days.

Edited on Fri Aug-12-05 11:04 AM by Dover
and now, I suppose they think that this coverup will simply receive a shrug from their readers too. I think they ought to be put out of business. The media should be held accountable by the law for enabling these public lies. Without their help, Bushco could never have pulled it off.

15. Why can't they see Rove GAVE them nothing?
Rove didn't give the NYT, or the Times, anything. He USED them. He USED them to commit a crime. He made them co-conspirators and they protected him hoping he'd throw them a bone now and then. He would never GIVE them anything - not even a bone. If he gave a bone, it would be for his own ends. How can they be so blind?

18. dont assume that
believe that

its exactly where the majority of media are coming from
why else would they continue their complicity
why else would we have to scream and blog for any pieces of truth
why else would they devote massive air time to white kids missing and african american crimes

money is where it all comes down for pretty much every person and industry and organization and government

but the people and the truth will prevail

33. Yah... The first Barnes and Noble I went to only had one left...
Edited on Sat Aug-13-05 02:48 AM by calipendence
... which I grabbed quickly. I wanted to get an extra copy for my Mom, so went to another. ?One person was looking at one of two copies that were left there. I grabbed the other. I think it's going to be pretty big sell-out for them. And a WELL DESERVED sellout!

You know, Vanity Fair, you've got the core content of a good magazine for ALL Americans, men and women. You know what would be cool is to have a "women's version" and a "men's version". I'd subscribe as a male who previously stayed away from women's magazines, but this is definitely not "FLUFF". It used to be we had to give the excuse that we bought Playboy for the articles, when we were looking at the other content, even though earlier Playboy had landmark article content as well. Now we have the same excuse buying a Vanity Fair, but we're not lying when we really are buying it for the articles! And I'm not talking about a Man's magazine that has to be salacious either. Just something to reach the common progressive minded man. With the dearth of decent news content in other magazines right now, I think this would be a good opportunity for Vanity Fair to really expand their subscriber base with a move like that! I'd definitely reward them for doing so!

27. NYT 'self dealt' --- well put
NYT USED to be pretty good newspaper, not anymore.

I imagine there is quite the internal debate at their headquarters these days - there is a noticeable lack of outcry over Judith Miller being jailed by media advocates.

They totally blew it on the buildup to the Iraq war, too - investigative journalism nonexistent.
