Pfizer, Lilly vow not to promote impotence drugs on Super Bowl

Bloomberg News

Pfizer, the world's biggest drug maker, and Eli Lilly & Co. said they won't advertise their impotence drugs Viagra and Cialis during the Super Bowl as part of an industry code.

The Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America trade group said Tuesday that 23 drug makers agreed to requirements that direct-to-consumer ads for all drugs explicitly describe the risks. The rules also will stop Super Bowl advertising for Viagra, the world's biggest impotence drug with $1.7 billion in sales last year, and Cialis, a rival pill from Lilly and Icos Corp., Pfizer and Lilly said separately.

(snip)

Cialis and Levitra impotence-drug ads ran during the game, Lilly spokesman Ed Sagebiel and Schering-Plough spokeswoman Mary-Fran Faraji said in separate interviews. Pfizer didn't advertise Viagra during this game, Katen said.

Schering-Plough couldn't immediately comment on whether it will run more Super Bowl ads for Bayer's Levitra impotence drug.
