Ex-Chiefs Disagree on Intell Overhaul (***Is A Surprise Coming Up?***)
A former CIA director yesterday endorsed a drastic overhaul of the nation's intelligence system, while another said radical change could make matters worse.

snip........

Yesterday's hearing -- the fourth held publicly since the panel was formed last year -- was interrupted by a lengthy emergency meeting that involved a "remarkable development" related to disputes over access to documents between the commission and the Bush administration, according to chairman Thomas H. Kean.

A commission spokesman said the development involved an agency other than the White House, but Kean and other members declined to reveal any other details. Kean said the panel will release more information by today. Several administration officials declined to comment or said they were unaware of the dispute.

Kean, a Republican former New Jersey governor, and the commission's vice chairman, former representative Lee H. Hamilton (D-Ind.), have said that the panel's work would be harmed if it does not receive access to crucial administration documents immediately. The commission has subpoena power.

2. say what?!
I am as appalled by Bushco as any DUer here, but I swear, if Georgie boy sneezed on camera, the threads here would be gushing about how Smirk is dying of pneumonia! Not to be disloyal to DU's zeitgeist, but we are never going to develop polticially workable strategies to defeat these people if we keep fantasizing about a sudden silver-bullet of a scandal that will make them all instantly get hauled-off to jail.

3. Not a silver bullet, but death by a thousand paper cuts
This may not topple the state at a single stroke, but drip, drip, drip, tick, tick, tick. Just one more little insult, one more little outrage, until the proverbial straw breaks the proverbial camel's back.

7. And the "cuts" are not all coming from the CIA...
...leaks are also coming from a variety of directions to include strong factions in the FBI; the military in Iraq, Afghanistan, and in the U. S.; the DOJ; senior civilians working in the Pentagon; and the State Department. And, unlike the past several years, the mainstream media is reporting ALL of it.

5. politically workable strategies
if the dems want to develop some backbone and tell the truth about George, I would be all for it.

In fact, I have often contacted both my reps and those of other states about this very thing.

however, if the past two years are an indication, I cannot rely upon my Congressman to be my representative, since, even though he is a dem, he was one of the big photo op Senators who undermined Biden and Lugar's attempts to halt the rush to war.

So I am forced to root for the CIA and others who are inside the beltway to be my spokesperson against this cabal.

The "silver bullet of a scandal" is maybe the one hope we have that the press will stop whoring for Bush...when it is absolutely impossible to do otherwise.

Unlike you, I have far less confidence in the health of democracy in this country at this time, and it would seem that corporations are more human, as humans are equal, and those humans are more equal than others.

Likewise, the right wing is disproportionately represented in the media, compared to those in America who share their views.

So what am I to make of the complicity of so many in the Bush lies? Am I to think that "workable political strategies" are feasible?

Not that I don't and won't do those things, but when you have had a (soft) coup in your country, followed by a war of aggression based upon lies, which was preceeded by an act which was designed to limit civil liberties for Americans...when you have millions opposed to Bush, but little to no objective press coverage, while maybe a hundred, if that, protestors in Alabama are big news...

well, maybe you can understand why I think that it will take someone(s) within the power structure to bring down these fascists.

8. Maybe a "(soft) coup," from within, is being attempted --
As Media_Lies_Daily says, "leaks are...coming from a variety of directions." I think many career professionals in our government recognize the potential for catastrophe we now face, thanks to the Bush administration.

4. Anyone remember this about Deutch?.....
IMPROPER HANDLING OF CLASSIFIED INFORMATION BY JOHN M. DEUTCH
<http://www.fas.org/irp/cia/product/ig_deutch.html>

Knowing this story, I've been VERY curious how this guy managed to get ANY role having to do with the reorganization of intelligence gathering.

I suspect that Deutch sees this as a chance to get even for his removal as head of the CIA. Just my opinion.

6. This is key....
"the deadlines always seem to be pushed back" on obtaining key documents, which sources have said include classified presidential daily bulletins issued in the weeks before the attacks.

What did Bush know and when did he know it?
