LIVERPOOL, England (AP) - A black teenager who was followed through a park by a group of men shouting racist taunts died Saturday after an attacker embedded an ax in his skull.

Anthony Walker, 18, was waiting for a bus with his girlfriend and a cousin when a man started shouting racist taunts at them late Friday near Walker's home in Liverpool, police said.

The three left to find another bus stop to avoid any trouble, police said. But a group of three or four men followed them through a park, and Walker's companions saw someone bludgeon him with an ax.

They ran to get help and returned a few minutes later to find him with the ax embedded in his skull, news reports said. Walker died early Saturday.

BRITISH police arrested a man on suspicion of murder overnight in their hunt for the killers of a black teenager left with an axe in his skull after a racist attack in Liverpool.

Anthony Walker, 18, a local college student, was attacked by a gang of three or four men, just minutes after he had been taunted with racial abuse while waiting for a bus with his girlfriend and a male relative on Friday night.

"Merseyside Police have arrested an 18-year-old man from Huyton on suspicion of the murder of Anthony Walker," a police spokesman said.

Police have arrested a second suspect in their investigation of the racially-motivated murder of Anthony Walker, a black Liverpool teenager who was killed with an axe at a bus stop on Friday night.

A 17-year-old youth was arrested last night in Huyton, Liverpool, the neighbourhood where Mr Walker was killed, and will be questioned at an unnamed Merseyside police station today.

Mr Walker, an A-level student, devout Christian and triallist for an England schoolboys basketball team, was attacked at the entrance to McGoldrick Park, in Huyton, as he escorted his white girlfriend to a bus stop.

Yesterday, surrounded by members of the family, his sister, Dominique, 20, described him as a "perfect son, wonderful grandson, loyal and loving brother and fantastic uncle and cousin".

Shaking with emotion, she said: "We couldn’t think of Anthony without smiling. Everyone who ever came into contact with him loved him. He blessed so many lives in his unique way. His life was stolen from him. Family and friends are devastated, their lives shattered."
