Inouye: GOP Not Doing Enough for Troops

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Sen. Daniel Inouye, D-Hawaii, an Army veteran who lost his right arm in World War II, criticized Republicans on Saturday for not doing enough to help troops fighting in or returning from Iraq.

In the Democrats' weekly radio address, Inouye said Senate Republicans were focusing on legislation sought by the gun lobby while ignoring the needs of troops.

On Tuesday, the Senate put off completion of a $491 billion defense bill to act on the National Rifle Association's top priority: shielding gun manufacturers and dealers from liability suits stemming from gun crimes.

''For years, we've heard the president and congressional Republicans speak eloquently about honoring our troops,'' Inouye said. ''But this week -- when push came to shove -- their priorities were different.''

The senator added: ''Our men and women who have served should not worry about funding for health care year after year, and our soldiers on the front lines should get the resources they need. Our Congress could consider our men and our women in uniform as our nation's top priority.''...

3. Good for him
After his sellout on ANWR, it is nice to see him being bold and standing up to the GreedyOldPigs.

I just got a new bumper sticker:
Support the Troops - Give them Healthcare

5. The military is the GOP's toy soldiers
They're their to make the GOP look good and nothing else.

How dare they (the military) ask for benefits. They should pull themselves up by their bootstraps.

6. If Inouye and the Dems weren`t such wussies this war crime would
not be chewing up our troops as cannon fodder while we watch the American media kiss Bu$h Inc. ass. Chickenshits bowing to a bunch of chickenhawks. Makes for deadly foriegn policy. If our leadership was more worried about lives than profits they could possibly grown a collective spine. Don`t anyone hold their breath for that to ever happen.

7. Inouye isn't a wuss
Edited on Sat Jul-30-05 11:59 PM by barb162
from his biography:

In the fall of 1944, Inouye's unit was shifted to the French Vosges Mountains and spent two of the bloodiest weeks of the war rescuing a Texas Battalion surrounded by German forces. The rescue of "The Lost Battalion" is listed in the U.S. Army annals as one of the most significant military battles of the century. Inouye lost ten pounds, became a platoon leader and won the Bronze Star and a battlefield commission as a Second Lieutenant.

Back in Italy, the 442nd was assaulting a heavily defended hill in the closing months of the war when Lieutenant Inouye was hit in his abdomen by a bullet which came out his back, barely missing his spine. He continued to lead the platoon and advanced alone against a machine gun nest which had his men pinned down. He tossed two hand grenades with devastating effect before his right arm was shattered by a German rifle grenade at close range. Inouye threw his last grenade with his left hand, attacked with a submachine gun and was finally knocked down the hill by a bullet in the leg.

Dan Inouye spent 20 months in Army hospitals after losing his right arm. On May 27, 1947, he was honorably discharged and returned home as a Captain with a Distinguished Service Cross (the second highest award for military valor), Bronze Star, Purple Heart with cluster and 12 other medals and citations.

His Distinguished Service Cross was recently upgraded to a Medal of Honor, the nation's highest award for military valor. He received that medal from the President of the United States on June 21, 2000.

8. If he cannot stand up against these murderers any better than he has
he is a wuss in my book. Too bad if you don`t like my opinion. Get over it. Medals don`t mean anything to me if you allow our troops to be used as a corporate tool. And that is exactly what he and the wussie dems are doing. You might be able to provide a man`s service record. Which he received by following orders. He allowed Bu$h and his nazi`s to issue unlawful orders to our cannon fodder troops. And I will never forgive the spineless punk for that. But you can. It`s still suppose to be a free country. But not for much longer I`ll bet. With poor leadership as his and his go along to get along dems sucking up to Bu$h Inc. We are doomed to make excuses until we don`t have the right to speak out against fascism at all.
