Russians outraged over U.S. interview
http://www.sciencedaily.com/upi/?feed=TopNews&article=UPI-1-20050730-09243500-bc-russia-chechnya.xml

MOSCOW, July 30 (UPI) -- Russian officials said Saturday they are outraged over an interview this week with Chechen rebel leader Shamil Basayev on an ABC News program. snip

During the "Nightline" interview, Basayev admitted taking part in the 2004 raid on a school in Beslan, but said the Russians were also terrorists. snip

More than 340 people were killed, at least 172 of them children, when Russian security forces stormed hostage-takers at a school in Beslan, North Ossetia, on Sec. 3, 2004.

1. Russia then can retaliate
by interviewing Bin Laden or Zarqawi or the other "Most Wanted" figures.

4. Or maybe send an FSB
guy to round up a bunch of ABC reporters' kids, wives, and girlfriends, hold them hostage, and then kill them while blowing up a studio.

ABC would go ballistic.

Then the Russian media can interview the guy as a "truth seeker", quoting him as saying that ABC is also responsible for death and destruction.

I'm sure the ABC staff would see the justice in that.

5. Basayev is scum. But what of Putin?
If ABC shouldn't interview Basayev, then shouldn't Putin interviews also be off limits?

"...

For the past 10 years Chechnya has been occupied by a foreign invader. Occupation breeds violence, which invites lawlessness on both sides. The abuses of civilians by Russian soldiers have been documented by various human rights organizations -- Physicians for Human Rights, Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International, and the Russian human rights organization Memoriale. Young Russian soldiers are also dying unnecessarily.

Ordinary Chechens share my sorrow at the terrible carnage at the school in Beslan. However, they are also fearful, knowing that they will be blamed. They are bracing themselves for reprisals. The Kremlin spin doctors have done a good job of casting us as international terrorists masterminded by Muslim extremists from the Middle East. Sadly, most people believe the propaganda, even though we do not know the ethnic composition of the hostage takers in Beslan. It does not matter. The school siege resulting in the deaths of hundreds of children was a heinous crime whoever was responsible.

6. Is this really the only response we have left as enlightened people?
Tit for tat. Or "what about <fill in boogie-man here>"

Is that really all?

Russians (not Putin) are quite right to decry the aggrandizement of such scum. Just because it is a heinous attack against another nation, the best we can call up from inside is this crap.

Pathetic guys. Truly.

8. Huh?
The Russians are right about Basayev, but it's OK for them to vote a man just as sick into office?

I find that ridiculous and sick.

13. Bet all you've got.
I can use the money.

You and I both know a Bin Laden interview would top the ratings in this country. And, if I wasn't doing something else, and it wasn't on cable, I might even bother watching it.

OK. Your point has been made.

Not sure why it needed to be made, but there you go.

16. I will never believe that bush was voted in
He stole both elections because he couldn't get voted in. We are living under a totalitarian dictator.

9. Because Putin wants everyone to think that its the same as Bushy's war
on tuuurrrruuurrr.

He doesn't want people to find out that a 1/3 of the male population of chechnya has died violently since 1990. Thats about 50 million people in US terms equivalent.

ABC are interviewing a truly nasty bastard, however Putin isn't concerned about that he's concerned about truths this guy may release about the Hell on earh that's been created in Chechnya
