WASHINGTON -- The Bureau of Land Management will continue to be able to sell wild horses and burros under a controversial federal program created last year which allowed some of the animals to be sent to slaughterhouses.

A proposed ban of the sales was approved by the House in May but did not make it into the final Interior Department spending bill passed Thursday. Nevada's representatives, Republicans Jon Porter and Jim Gibbons as well as Democrat Shelley Berkley, all voted for the final bill.

5. Horses died out once already in NA

Before the 16th century, North America hadn't seen an equine for over 10,000 years. They went extinct along with the giant beavers, mammoths and saber-tooth cats at the end of the Pleistocene age, so at this point, equines are an invasive species. They died off around the same time that an aggressive, big-butted, round-headed, bipedal primate was introduced to the continent. There's a certain poetic irony in helping kill off a species, reintroducing it (mostly by decimating the population of its primary predator) and then causing it to go extinct again.
