'Champion of democracy' awarded

New York - Spanish Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar will receive the prestigious World Statesman Award on Tuesday evening at a New York gala hosted by the Appeal of Conscience Foundation.

The 50 year-old conservative Spanish leader, who supported the US-led war to oust Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein, follows former Russian leader Mikhail Gorbachev and former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in picking up the accolade.

The Appeal of Conscience Foundation selected Aznar for the award because of "his courageous leadership and as indefatigable champion of democracy, freedom and tolerance."

Is so he could crack down on Basque separatists as terrorists without calling too much international attention.

...as Aznar did in backing the war on Iraq.

The site has pictures of last year's award, being presented by - ta dum! - that famous promoter of democracy, Kissinger. He liked to spread democracy by way of B-52s.

Under these circumstances, the award carries all the gravity of the kind that the Soviets routinely pinned on themselves. How like our old Soviet enemies we in the United States have become...
