WASHINGTON (AP) - The Homeland Security Department was leaning Thursday toward taking U.S. mass transit systems off high alert before the latest attacks in London, senior counterterror officials said.

But the attempted bombings - which panicked people still spooked from attacks two weeks ago - probably will prolong the orange alert for U.S. trains, subways and buses.

``Certainly, as we look at the threat level, we will factor in the information and intelligence we're receiving from the U.K., as well as information we're getting from other sources, as we consider what the right protective measures are,'' Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Brian Besanceney said. He said the department has reviewed the alert levels daily since they were raised to code orange, or high risk, on July 7.

The rest of the country remains at yellow alert, signifying an elevated risk, and counterterror officials said they have not seen any specific intelligence indicating an attack on the United States is planned.
