(Mont.) Governor vows to fight 'Last Best Place' trademark applications
Just another day for a donor to the Republican National Committee...

Montana Gov. Brian Schweitzer said Tuesday that he plans to mount a campaign to ensure the phrase "The Last Best Place" remains the property of the people of Montana.

The action comes in response to an effort by David E. Lipson, a Las Vegas businessman and owner of the Resort at Paws Up, to register eight trademarks for exclusive use of a phrase that is close to the heart of many Montanans.

Lipson's applications, which would cover about 100 commercial uses of "The Last Best Place," are in the final phase before registration, according to records from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

... Last month, Lipson drew attention from the Missoula City-County Health Department when his Blackfoot Valley resort opened despite lacking necessary business licenses. The Health Department has ordered the resort to close, yet Paws Up won't shut its doors.

... In the 1990s, Lipson was found liable for securities fraud for insider trading in a case involving Supercuts, the nationwide chain of discount-haircutting salons; Lipson served for a time in the 1990s as the company's chief executive officer. In that case, he was ordered to pay more than $2.8 million in civil penalties, according to a 2001 statement from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. Lipson declined to discuss this case with the Missoulian.

... According to legal documents, Lipson has a degree in law and is a certified public accountant. He spent 25 years with the Chicago-based accounting firm of Arthur Andersen & Co., where he was a tax partner, court records say.

1. prevent trademarking of phrases in the common language and use...
one should not be able to trademark phrases used in common and every day language. say, "there you go again" like reagan said, that should not be trademarkable. any common language being appropriated for personal and or commercial gain.......no dice.

PS - the letters MSONGS used together in relation to the creation/distribution of music in multiple ways is trademarked by yours truly. took a lot of research and study to learn how the system works.
