Turkey Condemns Congressman's Remarks
By BENJAMIN HARVEY, Associated Press Writer
42 minutes ago

ISTANBUL, Turkey - Turkey's foreign minister Tuesday condemned comments made last week by a U.S. congressman that the United States could "take out" Islamic holy sites if there was a nuclear attack on America by Muslim fundamentalists.

"This was nothing but a fanatic speaking completely personally, irresponsibly and without thought of how far his statements would reach or what kind of problems they would create," Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul said, according to the Anatolia news agency. The Foreign Ministry confirmed Gul's remarks.

On Friday, Rep. Tom Tancredo, R-Colo., was asked by a talk show host how the United States should respond if terrorists struck several of its cities with nuclear weapons.

"Well, what if you said something like — if this happens in the United States, and we determine that it is the result of extremist, fundamentalist Muslims, you know, you could take out their holy sites," Tancredo answered.

3. Interesting reaction : Turkey is a secular state
where scarfs laws are tougher than in France...

they go ballistic when they hear that stuff. They just had two bombings lately. They don't want more trouble...

This is like desecrating the Quoran, you could directly provide Osama with explosives, it would be less efficient

5. It's very, very sad that
...international foreign diplomats are forced to "clean up the mess" left behind from ignorant, useless fucking nobodies in the US mouthing off on US talk radio, FOR FEAR OF VIOLENT REPRISALS TEN THOUSAND MILES AWAY from where the statement was made. (In Canada and the UK, we call similar pols "backbenchers", ie. "useless fucking nobodies", and they're discouraged from opening their cakeholes unless an issue directly affects their constituents...)

7. How do the Repugs who repeat their mantra of "support the troops"
condone a US Congressman endangering our troops with mindless threats
like this? Everytime a Dem makes an statement criticizing the handling of the war we are branded "anti-troop" or aiding the enemy. The repugs should be demanding an apology from this guy.

Turkish minister condemns U.S. congressman's comment on destroying Mecca

19:48 2005-07-19
As PRAVDA.Ru earlier predicted, a remark made by U.S. Congressman Tom Tancredo of Colorado on the possibility of destroying Islamic holy sites caused discontent amid true followers of Islam. Turkey's foreign minister publicly condemned Tancredo's comments.

Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul condemned comments by U.S. Congressman Tom Tancredo of Colorado that the United States could "take out" Islamic holy sites if there were a nuclear attack on America by Muslim fundamentalists, says the AP.

10. These kinds of comments lead to HATRED on a level resulting
in suicide bombings, assassination, actions to hurt this Nation....

Tancredo should at once apologize and render his statement moot.

If he doesn't...Arrogance/Ignorance is revealed......

17. Sure, he'll issue the standard GOP "Appology..."
"I am sorry if anyone was offended by my words."

Example:

Republican: "You're an asshole."

Democrat: "I'm offended that you called me an asshole."

Republican: "I am sorry that you're offended by me calling you an asshole."

19. Colorado rep ripped for remark on attacking Islamic holy sites
http://www.suntimes.com/output/news/cst-nws-turk20.html

ISTANBUL, Turkey -- Top U.S. and Turkish officials on Tuesday condemned comments made last week by Rep. Tom Tancredo (R-Colo.) that the United States could ''take out'' Islamic holy sites if there was a nuclear attack on America by Muslim fundamentalists.

He refused to apologize Tuesday and said his comments had been taken out of context.

U.S. State Department spokesman Adam Ereli called the statements Tancredo made Friday ''insulting and offensive.''

20. He should be officially reprimanded by Congress.
The damage he has done to our credibility is beyond measure, and we had very little cred left in the first place. Disgusting racist punk. At the very least, Congress should reprimand him.

25. Don't hold your breath waiting for a Durbin-style firestorm
Dick Durbin can quote extensively from an FBI report on the conditions at Guantanamo, and call our government's actions those of some mad regime (which they are), and all hell breaks loose. Because we're not torturing people at Guantanamo? Well, no. Because it makes our nation look like it's governed by a mad regime? No again -- the administration is barking mad. Because Durbin's party affiliation is with the Democrats? Bingo!

But Tancredo can make the most odious statements, endangering our troops in the field and confirming the Moslem world's worst suspicions about American motives, and nobody in Congress utters a peep. Because Tancredo, as clearly deranged as he is, is affiliated with the Republicans.

Right, wrong, or indifferent, the guy stands by what he said...kind of refreshing, in these days of noodle dick politicos, who can't see past their next (s)election...

The party could learn something, here...but somehow, I doubt it...stand for something, or fall for everything, how hard is this shit, anyway???

29. He was correct though
The US "Could take out" but I am hopeful that Bush isn't that stupid. Of course I have been prooven wrong more times than I can count on that.

He should be censured for sure in the Senate for such a blatant attempt to put my friends in a worse position than they are now. To bad I am not a CO voter, I would start a petition to get this guy out of office.

31. "The sad thing is"???
I can imagine anyone being a leader, who actually has the guts to stand up, & be counted. Much as I vehemently oppose this endless quagmire, in Iraq, nowhere have I seen the party leadership, besides Dean, have the intestinal fortitude, to stand up & be counted, & call for an immediate withdrawal, or anything even approaching a solution, to the hell hole, the "leadership" helped to create.

It's all about quaking, & shaking, & acting like they're powerless, to open their frigging mouths, or so much as offer a word, of dissent. Change the subject, talk about "issues", that aren't even issues (video games), anything but admit the obvious, while acting like it's impossible to fight back...

Lest the "leadership" forget, there's the sons & daughters, of our fellow Americans, dying in that snake pit, & turning their backs, on this disaster, won't make it go away.

"Grand Theft Auto"??? What the fuck about "Grand Theft Democracy", "Grand Theft the Treasury", "Grand Theft American Blood", "Grand Theft America"??? Life's too short, to play their game...& it is, their game...a sick, twisted parlor game...blood & treasure charades...

And fuck the "Free Republic"..."Free America"...to die for...
