Tancredo: No apology
He believes bombing of Muslim holy sites has been discussed

By M.E. Sprengelmeyer, Rocky Mountain News
July 19, 2005

WASHINGTON - The remarks were hypothetical but the outrage was real.

Facing mounting criticism, Rep. Tom Tancredo on Monday refused to apologize for suggesting the United States could target Muslim holy sites if radical Islamic terrorists set off multiple nuclear attacks in American cities.

"It's a tough issue to deal with," Tancredo told reporters at a Capitol Hill news conference. "Tough things are said. And we should not shy away from saying things that need to be said."

Tancredo is known for his fiery rhetoric on immigration and other issues, but his words are coming under more scrutiny because he has started traveling to test the waters for a possible presidential candidacy in 2008.

A spokeswoman for House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi called Tancredo's remarks irresponsible.

3. Here's where the Right seperates from the Left
If they think the base is there, that there are just enough voters to put them in office, they could care less about apologizing for anything they say that's offensive to others. They could care less about uniting.
Only when the base starts to slide, then they might start backtracking on this stuff.

8. Can't believe his arrogance and stupidity
Edited on Tue Jul-19-05 10:00 AM by beboplives
Those two qualities seem to be bedfellows with the RW these days. Surely this man has not read anything about the Islamic faith. Does he know what the repurcussions of such an act would be? Does he actually think that a proper response to such a horrendous attack on our nation, by a minute percentage of those who claim to be following their religions tenets, would be to inflame the vast majority of the religion's followers who would not sympathize with such an attack?

Of course, the Hannity's of the world will give this nothing put patriotic, vitriolic spin, and claim Tancredo as a hero, while Sen. Durbin was made to look like Benedict Arnold. I think Tancredo's response is MUCH more damaging in giving fuel to our enemies.

His office and email should be flooded with messages from clear thinking citizens still demanding an apology, and a response to this from the White House.

10. The majority in the GOP seem to be proudly ignorant on most issues
intellectualism is akin to liberalism to them, so they rely on emotional kneejerk reactions to issues instead.

A terrorist was sent to prison for bombing an abortion clinic yesterday; by Tancredo's logic, all Christian holy places should be destroyed because of the actions of a single madman.

11. There is a lesson to be learned here
Republicans say what they mean and don't back down when people call them out on it. Rove didn't apologize for his remarks about our side, Santorum did not apologize for what he said about gays, and Tommy Tan won't apologize either. Tancredo knows that a forced apology will do him no good. Come on folks, be honest. Would we all just say that everything is fine now if Tancredo apologized? No, we wouldn't. We would continue to beat up on him and what he said, because we all know what his true feelings are. He knows it, and most Republicans know it. When Trent Lott was forced to apologize for his racist comments it still did him no good and he lost his job anyway.

Republicans stick to their guns when they say sharp-tongued things, even if it pisses off a lot of people. Meanwhile, everytime a Democrat says something hard-hitting or inflammatory the right just cranks up their echo machine until he apologizes, which makes all of us who defended him look foolish, and we are left holding the bag. Then of course, the right wingers continue to beat up on the speaker even after their forced apology (which is usually written by some staffer). The consequence for this is that Republicans look strong and come across as having resolve, while Democrats come across as vacillating and unable to stand on principle. Americans respect that even if they don't agree with what the speaker is saying.

"Tough things are said. And we should not shy away from saying things that need to be said."

I couldn't agree more.

16. That is so true.
And the worst part is that when Durbin said the tactics used in Cuba were similar to SS guards in Nazi Germany - he was speaking the truth, no matter how hard it is to hear.

This nutjob is speaking total wackiness - he is ranting in a most delusional, psychotic, monstrous way to even suggest America should target religious sites of any kind.

I read on DU the other day that someone said this and I assumed it was a dumb caller on CSPAN or something. I cannot believe a representative said this and stands by it!

These people are INSANE. Goddess save us.

30. Heard him this morning.....
This guy was on KFYI here in Phoenix this morning, talking about immigration policies. I didn't realize it was the same guy until I did some more reading here. He mentioned he was thinking about running. Good Lord.

Why was I listening to FYI? Sometimes I like to see just how long I can take it before I go nuts. Endurance test, you might say.
