"The Bradley struck a land mine. It could have been put there minutes before or hours before," Major Gordon Tate told Reuters in fugitive Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein (news - web sites)'s home town of Tikrit.

Sunday's attack brought to 95 the number of U.S. soldiers killed in action in Iraq since President Bush (news - web sites) declared major combat over on May 1.

1. Despicable!
When will it end?

Where are the weapons?

Where is Saddam Hussein?

Why aren't the Iraqis greeting our soldiers with flowers and cheers?

Why does the violence continue unabatted months after Bush declared major hostilities in Iraq to be over?

12. BRING IT ON !!!
Saw some idiot Colonel on the TV this morning praising the building of blast barriers around the hotels, to keep the CIA agents safe. He basially said that this proves we can keep our agents safe now that we are winning the WAR.

He is a very sick man in a DEEP state of DENIAL.

17. It's at least 201 dead since May 1.
Like the reason really matters. That 95 number makes me sick.

9. The number of suicides is significant
I read somewhere that there are suspicions that the depression that led to suicides may have been triggered by some of the vaccinations the GIs were given.

16. Wounded?
You must have noticed that the number of wounded is given but NOT what the wounds are, no tally of how many legs and arms amputated, how many blinded, how many hit in the groin. WHY isn't this to be found someplace?

Soldier killed in Iraq as US forces probe second major bombing in four days
(AFP)

13 October 2003

BAGHDAD - A US soldier was killed in northern Iraq, as American forces on Monday investigated the second major car bomb in four days, which left at least six people dead in Baghdad and further fueled tension.

The soldier died of his wounds after his Bradley fighting vehicle hit a landmine on Sunday night near Baiji, 220 kilometers (140 miles) north of Baghdad, a US military spokesman said, adding that another soldier was wounded.

In another violent development, a firefight with US troops early on Monday left one Iraqi dead and three others wounded, including a policeman, near the flashpoint town of Baqubah northeast of Baghdad, police said.

The shootout occurred after US troops arrested 20 people during a house-to-house search in the village of Zagenia, 15 kilometers (10 miles) north of Baqubah, a police officer said. (snip/...)

Drums (CNN,FOX) keep pounding rhythm ("it's not as bad as you probably think") to the brain,
La-de-da-de-dee,
La-de-da-de-da.

Men still keep a-marchin' off to war...

10. Sonny Bono was
singing about the Nam, we need a new voice to start singing protest songs about this quagmire. The count now is 327 dead and an unknown number of wounded, officially it's 1800 something, but, the govt. has a long history of hiding information.

19. Here's one about Iraq

Blessed Are the Peacemakers

Not the yellow brick road

Not the road that leads to an Emerald City

That’s not the road we’re about to take

Not lions and tigers and bears to fear

Much more than that my friends at stake

The world stands uneasy, waits in dread

While planes are crouched across the land

Waiting to drop their fearsome loads

On any who dare resist our stand

While the hawks beat the drums loud and long

And the people cheer and the band plays on

Hawks strangle the cry of the dove of peace

The eagle its arrows clenched tight in one claw

Has dropped with a thud the olive branch

The God of War holds sway---now the rule of law

While the hawks beat the drums loud and long

And the people cheer and the band plays on

Now the fresh faced boys by the thousand fold

Shipped across the seas to a distant stand

Where they’ll fight and die in the Baghdad streets

Along side the children of that land

While the bombers stream their lethal load

The mother’s will weep and the blood will flow

The thunder of war fill the acrid air

The sand stained red by friend and foe

Then soon the planes make their return flights

Bringing back a load from that distant place

And the boy that marched into the hold

Carried out with a flag on his young dead face

Now the hawks are silent, the drums are stilled

While newly dug graves receive the boys killed

The puzzled people now shake their heads

And wonder how and where it all went wrong

They didn’t think it was going to end like this

When the voices brayed “WAR” and the band played on.

13. ______Land Mine Attack ? ? ? ? ?

. . Land Mine Attack ?

How to you get "attacked" by a land mine ?

I was expecting an ambush story or something

Not making light of anything, but when some kid steps on a land mine from past wars, that is hardly an ATTACK.

Just more Media sensationalism IMHO

15. Huh?
I beg to differ, but placing an explosive in a roadway that is used by US forces is an attack by any definition. Too bad if it's not dramatic enough for you, but equally deadly. I'm not sure why you think this mine was from a previous war.

18. You don't get attacked, but when was it put there?
I don't really see a difference between an IED and a landmine. If you plant them in the middle of the road, they do the same thing.

20. I read the news today, oh boy...
more deaths. We have no idea how many of the wounded have suffered amputations, blinding, other hideous, devastating injuries. Even those who make it back without obvious physical trauma will carry deep psychic scars. The Bush administration has already pretty much broadcast it's intention of screwing the vets out of any medical benefits they might be mistakenly be thinking they are entitled to.

What about the pain and suffering of the Iraqui people? The one in the story from a couple of days ago, where his entire orchard was bulldozed by our troops as punishment for not turning resistance fighters in...his source of livlihood is gone. I admit to complete ignorance of their culture, but from what I've been able to tell, they are a very proud people. I would imagine that such an act does more than destroy trees, it must also insult his pride, his ability to provide for his family.

The suffering on both sides is horrific, and the blame rests with Bush, and his arrogant insistance on having this war under any pretext, simply because he wanted it. My heart is breaking for all of them, from our soldiers to the Iraqui people. What incredible waste, brought about by one miserable excuse for a human being.
