BBC: Tribal chief 'hanged by Taleban'

:::SNIP:::

A tribal chief has been kidnapped and hanged in southern Afghanistan. The Taleban say they carried out the act.

Malik Agha, a supporter of President Hamid Karzai, was abducted on Friday, police in Zabul province say. His body was found later in the day.

The Taleban have been blamed for the killing of a number of Mr Karzai's supporters in the run-up to September's parliamentary elections.

Fighting between the Taleban and US-led forces has increased in recent weeks.

More than 30 people, most of them Taleban or their allies, are reported to have been killed since Thursday.

2. I wonder if the Taliban would have formed
without the aid of the Bushevistas. Or if they would have gained in strength and numbers without the aid of #41 and #43.

5. Too complex to say...
... but the Taliban were aided by the Russians (their having invaded), the Saudis and Americans (supporting Osama bin Laden and the mujahedeen against the Russians), the Saudis and Pakistanis (funding and support of Wahabiism), and the warlords (whose greed and lust for power generated the conditions in which the Taliban were initially viewed as preferable by Afghanis).

Lather, rinse, repeat.

Everyone I know thinks the Taliban was "destroyed" three years ago.

6. Just exiled, really. (As was clear then)
And now, with our forces diverted to Iraq and a growing insurgency there, the Taliban and al Qaeda are on the offensive in Afghanistan.
