NASA delays space shuttle launch indefinitely
CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — NASA's first shuttle flight in more than two years has been put off indefinitely as the space agency mounts a massive investigation into why a fuel gauge failed right before Discovery's scheduled liftoff.

Engineers were no closer Friday to knowing why the gauge acted up two days earlier.

"We are going forward on a day-by-day basis," said deputy shuttle program manager Wayne Hale.

"We have got the entire resources of the agency behind us to troubleshoot this problem."

1. No reason to hurry launching a mission.

Space flight is something with which it is better to be careful.

3. I agree, I am glad they are not sticking to a definitive date..
this paragraph does cause concern tho, imo.

"Hale also suggested for the first time that if the problem can't be explained after days or weeks of effort, NASA might be forced to consider flying with the fuel gauge mystery unsolved."

14. Do what now?
Explain, O wise one, exactly how the launch - a scheduled logistics and maintainence mission to ISS - was military. Were they planning to put up some spy satellites? Orbital Death Rays? What?

15. Speaking of the ISS
is Russia going to be able to restock it if we can't get back up there?

16. They should
Russia can at least keep the station supplied with food, water & oxygen if Discovery's grounded for another undetermined period. But Russia can't haul anything like heavy spares, scientific gear or the like.

19. they even reported that a part of the launch was military

was on cable, probably CNN - maybe Dobbs' show

or I saw it on Miami's Fox CH. evening news

where ever, the reporter asked about military and the dude said yes

I agree with the other poster that it was military with ISS as a cover.

20. That's lunacy
WTF dude? One reporter says something about the military - and you don't even remember what it was - and you're ready to indict the entire program for being military?

Keerist.

6. True. And another shuttle disaster would bring into question...
WTF is going on in HIS GOVERNMENT? Once again. Sigh. Honestly, I wish they would scrub the orbiter and take that funding and get on with the next generation vehicle. This one is obsolete, past it's life expectancy.

They should work with that guy in Texas (?) who built a vehicle that goes into space via an aircraft and lands safer. They should also work with other space agencies more.

Aww, China will probably beat us to Mars anyway.

11. Yup. Burt Rutan should head the space agency.

And the shuttle fleet was obsolete by the time it first launched. Some tried to tell them that, but IMO there was too much invested by the defence industies that conttol our government.

7. Next launch window: mid-September
I'd also like to know whether it was a fuel gauge or a fuel pump. I've heard each.

another accident. NASA is now a military agency anyway, and the shuttle stuff was just to amuse the "peasants".

The cutting-edge "for the good of humanity" stuff ended a long time ago anyway, and to get the public behind the agency they have to at least pretend that NASA is about altruistic exploration. It's no longer "safe".. It never really was, but we had a whole lot of non-political, really smart people in charge back then. and we were very lucky too...

Now we have mostly political idealogues running things, and maybe they are just not as smart as they need to be..

25. They could probably design an entirely new craft to replace it...
faster than they could get the current fleet safe enough to launch.
