Gerlach's Rove tie criticized

His office says an event featuring the embattled presidential aide will go on despite foes' remarks.

By Nancy Petersen

Inquirer Staff Writer

Democrats are seizing on Chester County Republican U.S. Rep. Jim Gerlach's invitation to embattled presidential adviser Karl Rove to host a fund-raiser for him next week in Washington.

"Jim Gerlach should do the right thing and not feature Karl Rove at his fund-raiser," said Lois Murphy, Gerlach's likely Democratic challenger for the Sixth District congressional seat.

Although Fitzpatrick has said that Rove is not a target of his investigation, Murphy and other Democrats argue that his appearance at Gerlach's fund-raiser is at best "unseemly."

"This is not a personal attack," she said. "It is legitimate criticism. He is cozying up to Washington insiders rather than taking seriously the concerns people here in the district have about Karl Rove."

1. He is my "representative," in a gerrymandered district that was created
for him. But he is barely holding on to it (too much blue on the Main Line).

But Stu Rothenberg, author of a Washington-based nonpartisan political newsletter, questioned how much the controversy has attracted the attention of the average voter. "Gerlach is going to be vulnerable no matter what," Rothenberg said. "He needs the cash, and he needs to rally the base. The Democrats will make whatever political hay of it they can."

The event, billed as a VIP Roundtable Discussion and Rooftop Reception, costs $2,500 to sit at the roundtable with Rove, and $1,000 to attend the reception, the invitations say. According to his most recent filings, as of June 30, Gerlach has raised more than $800,000.

The district, which Gerlach has won by whisker-thin margins in the last two elections, stretches from Lower Merion to Reading, taking in parts of Montgomery, Chester and Berks Counties and one precinct in Lehigh County.

5. Rove is radioactive
Gerlach may as well have walked right in the front door of Chernobyl right after the explosion.
