Air Force Academy Chaplain Resigns
AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. - A chaplain who spoke out against religious intolerance at the Air Force Academy has resigned her commission just as a report was to be released addressing the issue.

An academy critic said the report concluded the problem was serious.

Capt. Melinda Morton resigned Tuesday after 13 years serving the Air Force, one day before a task force created in early May was to release its report.

Morton had said in May that she was fired from her chaplaincy at the school and a transfer to Japan was hastened because she spoke out about the academy's religious climate. School officials said her move was routine.

1. Now she will be free to speak her mind tomorrow when the report comes out.

"Morton's attorney, Gene Fidell, told The Gazette in Colorado Springs that the resignation was not coerced or out of fear of disciplinary action.

"She will be liberated from whatever constraints that exist and continue to speak her mind," he said."

edit to add - they tried to hide her away to shut her up but it won't work.

4. And we recognize your sacrifice
Thirteen of the productive years of one's life given up. The investment of that time toward building a pension for one's old age is now gone.

She gave a lot and will probably be giving more before the dust settles on this issue. She is a woman of faith, a Christian and up until recently, a member of our Armed Forces. And she can't abide the injustices she has witnessed. So, what is the GOP rebuttal to this woman? We will all be interested to see how they treat this woman of faith who worked in service to the country under the flag the neocons like to wrap themselves in! We will be watching like hawks.

We need to make sure her back is covered. We need to beat any Republican who attacks her. We need to pummel any detractor with their own hypocrisy and we need to do it often and publicly. Ruin anyone who would demean this patriot. Support the troops indeed. Support, also, those who stand for them against bigotry.

5. What a pack of jackals
"Routine" transfer to Japan, my ass. I hope that now that she has resigned, she can blast them nonstop and embarass the hell out of the fundies. I heard her interviewed briefly on NPR and she sounded sane; the rest of them are a pack of lunatics bent on converting everyone in the Air Force to their brand of crap.

7. Why would an opponent of religious intolerance be treated,...
,...in such a way? Is intolerance now the policy at the AFA?

This is terribly concerning. Who authorized Evangelical Protestants to go on school property to harass other individuals?

Hopefully, Capt. Morton will have the opportunity to expose this situation.

I send my very best wishes to her.

It's lovely during the spring time

Maybe this is one of the "Undisclosed Locations" where "Enemy Combatants" are being held?

Wouldn't it be just like us to send middle eastern desert-dwellers to The South Pole?

11. Both sides are correect here
She was fired for speaking out. Firing people who question evangelical proselytizing is also "routine"

12. Fundamentalist military coup in store???
If this is how our military leadership deals with Christian dissent, I would be very afraid of how they would deal with an insufficiently "christian" elected government.

Don't ever think it can't happen here.
