RNC protestor goes on trial

Opening statements are expected Tuesday in the trial of a protester arrested after unfurling an anti-Bush banner at last summer's Republican National Convention.

On the evening of Sept. 2, during President George W. Bush's acceptance speech, June Brashares, 41, stood on top of a chair in the California delegation and held up a banner that read, "Bush Lies, People Die."

In response she was escorted out of Madison Square Garden by security to a chorus of "Four more years," forcing Bush to stop his speech.

She is charged with kicking one of the guards, Shawn Flannigan, while she was dragged out, causing a cut to his shin. "It's a fabrication," said Brashares' lawyer, Robert Gottlieb. "It's a made up lie. They grabbed her and removed her."

He described the men who removed her as Republican "security goons" wearing yellow baseball caps emblazoned with a black "W", a nickname for the president.

Calls to the Republican National Committee in Washington were not returned.

5. That was my first thought, too..
She's a Hero!

"June Brashares, 41, stood on top of a chair in the California delegation and held up a banner that read, "Bush Lies, People Die."

If she had the nerve to do this..she has the nerve to stand up through this and get the attention it deserves.

I can just see those rnc "goons" with their stupid w hats advertising what asswipes they are.

2. June Brashares is a true patriot!
I just loved watching Bush - he didn't know what the hell to do! Hilarious!

Does anyone have the video of this (not from C-SPAN but a downloadable version)?

4. I saw that with an online video. They really roughed her up.
It was definitely the highlight of the evening, though, and bush had his usual "deer in the headlights" look.

Hey, if they can't protect the RNC, how can they protect the *cough* homeland?

6. "A made-up lie" - is that lawyer-speak?
It reminds me of Steve Martin's "lies and made-up facts." It also reminds me of bush's lies and made-up facts, which I most sincerely hope bite him in the ass, and that right soon.

22. "made up lie" Interesting concept a double negative.
lie= "not true"
made up= not true = lie
made up lie you are fabricating a lie

Hence it would be a not true lie. If you made up a lie couldn't it be the truth?

Double plus good double speak

14. Pretty flakey case, I'll bet...
One of the "W" goons cut his leg while dragging her out? What, he bumped his shin on a chair, or one of his Co-Goons got him while trying to get HIS boot in her ass?

Oh, I know how it goes in Bush's Amerika...If she had just stayed in her chair, soaking the cushion like everyone else there, the Goons wouldn't have had to hurt themselves when they dragged her out.

We had a case here where a morbidly obese, sick town marshall died of a heart attack after wrestling with a drunk teen during an arrest. They charged the kid with murder, and the defense successfully showed that the marshall could have blown a coronary struggling to pinch a loaf, and really had no business trying to arrest somebody in his condition....

18. Such arrogance
is hard to ignore. She wasn't hurting anyone (except the poor chimp's feelings, perhaps) yet they thought they had a right to lay their hands on her to escort her out?

If she DID kick one in the shins it was no more than he deserved.

This whole "Silence the Dissent" thing they've got going on is dispicable.

27. I should point out that similar actions were taken at the DNC
(albeit not as violent, and the crowd was definitely not on the side of the security folks) - Medea Benjamin of Code Pink was forcibly ejected when she protested at the Democratic National Convention. I saw her being dragged out (I was about 40 feet from her).

However, from what I could see, it was Fleet Center security doing it, not private goons like this bunch of clowns. And she wasn't beat up.

19. Thank goodness we have people with this kind of courage.
If she had the fortitude to stand up in the middle of the RNC convention I think she can handle a frivolous trial like this. Where do I contribute to her defense fund?

26. How scary is it to truly ponder this trial???????????????
I mean.. the woman was arrested and tried for kicking a "guard"? How about the asshole that grabbed the protester off the chair by her hair during the youth segment of the RNC convention?? This should have NEVER happened, they shouldn't have manhandled her. This is fascist shit..
