Royalists, communists return to Baghdad
Royalists, communists return to Baghdad

Big News Network.com Wednesday 16th July, 2003

Tribalism, communism and royalists are re-appearing in Iraq with the establishment of a ruling council, reports said Tuesday.

Iraq's royalists, including the pretender to the throne, mourned the 45th anniversary of their last monarch's violent overthrow Monday, the New York Times reported.

Sharif Ali, who returned to Baghdad from exile in Lebanon and London last month, greeted scores of emotional visitors near a banner proclaiming him the hope of Iraq

Two miles away, supporters of the radical parties that butchered Faisal and all but one member of the royal family on the steps of Rihab Palace in Baghdad loudly celebrated Iraq's revolution of July 14, 1958.

1. Uh ...
Salam Pax's latest Guardian column has an account of communists and royalists both demonstrating to mark the coup that ended that monarchy. He said he marched with the communists, shook hands with the royalists, and found the whole thing inspiring. The fact that communists and royalists are able to express themselves freely in Iraq is ... a good thing, whatever one things of their ideologies. I don't expect it to last, but -- what happened to democracy? This is what it's supposed to look like!

3. Communist on "governing council."
I was pleased to hear that the "governing council" at least incorporated popular forces like the Communist Party and the SCIRI. As for the INC and similar forces, or monarchists, they have little basis to claim support.

5. Those "Communists" are the true democrats of Iraq
and they have always been there, underground for sure.

I suggest you read some of Iraq's history and find out how the CIA used the Baathist Party to persecute the Communists.
