Few Japanese support sending troops to Iraq
TOKYO (AP)

Less than one-fifth of the Japanese polled by a major newspaper support a government plan to send troops to help rebuild war-torn Iraq, according to a survey published yesterday.

A similar poll conducted by a commercial television network also indicated public opinion is deeply divided over the deployment, which was authorised by parliament last week and could begin as earlier as this autumn. ---

The Mainichi said many Japanese might have changed their minds because the current effort is not clearly backed by the United Nations, and US troops and their allies have not found weapons of mass destruction.
