(WA) State Unemployment Rises To 7.7 Percent
(And check out Oregon's new unemployment rate below!)

OLYMPIA - Washington's unemployment rate increased to 7.7 percent in June, the highest level since April 2002, the Employment Security department reported Tuesday.

The increase of three-tenths of a percentage point contrasts with other signs that the economy is strengthening, Employment Security Commissioner Sylvia Mundy said. "While some sectors are showing signs of recovery, businesses overall are not yet convinced that demand will be sufficient to justify hiring," Mundy said.

The national jobless rate increased by a similar amount to 6.4 percent. In neighboring Oregon, the unemployment rate for June was 8.5 percent, the highest in nearly 17 years.

2. I'm in Oregon
And we are being devastated by the Bush economic, yet the local freepers choose to blame it on Clinton. When will the populace wake up? I am tired of being broke.

3. since Wa, Or, California have Dem governors
are they also feeling the voters blame? I worry about the situation that if the states are in bad shape they will vote the dem governors more than Bush who deserves much of the blame for the economic conditions in the states.

7. In Washington, yes
Only 11 percent of voters said they would "definitely" vote for Gov. Gary Locke last week. And he had an approval rating of 33 percent.

It's complicated here. Locke has, in my opinion, not done a good job and has been way too Republican in his dealings. However, his and the Legislature's hands have been tied by crazy tax-cutting initiatives passed by the voters in recent years that have seriously reduced state revenue.

8. In Oregon, maybe
Governor Kulongoski has come out conservatively at first since his election, saying basically that we need to do more with less. Well, we HAVE been doing more with less since 1990, when Ballot Measure 5 capped property taxes. The R's have controlled the Legislature all along, despite the D's having all the statewide offices. It's basically a total stalemate right now. The Legislature is in an extended session, can't agree on how to balance the budget, and there is a projected $2 billion dollar deficit (in a state with 3 million people, many unemployed.)

Kulongoski has yet to show his hand, IMO.

4. TO: Liberal_Guerilla
If the FReepers want to blame President Clinton instead of pResident Bush then let them. You shouldn't care if they are unemployed and living from day to day. Just care for yourself!!! Get yourself a job and say the hell with them. If these
ding-dongs don't want to work then I say fine with that.

It is also quite possible that they are not able to work. Seeing that they are FReepers, they can't be to bright and lack the ability to pick of cow manurer!!!
