Group Wants Warning Labels on Potato Chips (cancer)
http://www.latimes.com/news/local/state/la-me-potato17jun17,1,47365.story?coll=la-news-state

A California environmental group filed notices Thursday that it planned to sue food manufacturers to require them to put warnings on potato chips, which contain high amounts of a cancer-causing chemical formed when starchy foods are cooked at high temperatures.

The state's anti-toxics law, Proposition 65, requires companies to warn consumers about products containing chemicals known to cause cancer or birth defects.

The Environmental Law Foundation reported Thursday that it tested a dozen types of potato chips, produced by Lay's, Kettle Chips, Cape Cod and Pringles, and that all of them contained excessive levels of acrylamide. For every product tested, a 1-ounce serving eaten daily exceeded levels that require a cancer warning under Proposition 65, the group reported.

One variety, Cape Cod Robust Russet, contained 6.5 parts per million, which is 910 times more acrylamide than the level that the state's environmental health agency has determined poses an unacceptable risk, the report says. That is almost twice as much as the second-highest level, reported for Kettle Chips Lightly Salted.

3. From what I have heard,
it can happen to most carbohydrates that are exposed to high temperatures. Fries, potato chips, even BREAD. Yikes.

2. I remember thinking, "WTF" when the CA rep introduced a similar warning
against trans fats like those found in Oreo cookies.

Now look, the industry recognizes the problem and nutritional labels will soon be required to list "Trans Fat" content.

11. Yeah, and ban potato chip eating from public places
All that crunching is bound to release molecules of potato chips into the air, which will then be breathed in by others!

And when these potato chip addicts die of potato chip cancer, NO TEARS! they deserve it! They knew potato chips weren't good for them!

and cause your lungs to burn and your throat to tighten when you catch the faintest whiff of them.

14. Personally, I'm Actually More Worried About Acrylamides
than about second-hand smoke or most substances which supposedly cause cancer.

Acrylamides had already been identified as a carcinogen from industrial workplaces BEFORE they were discovered in chips and other starchy foods. IMO, the industrial hygiene profession is a better guide to serious health risks than the usual consumer alerts in the media.

20. Food you cook at home has this, too.
Are they going to put warning labels on bags of raw potatoes at the grocery store, too? Cooking potatoes (and other foods) at high temps will produce acrylamide.
