Schiavo autopsy report backs husband
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/8225637

Medical examiner says she suffered from 'irreversible' brain injury

TAMPA, Fla. - In a victory for Michael Schiavo, a coroner who performed an autopsy on Terri Schiavo reported Wednesday that she suffered from an irreversible brain injury and would not have recovered as her parents insisted was possible.

Her brain was profoundly atrophied," Jon Thogmartin, medical examiner for Florida's Pinellas and Pasco counties, told a press conference. "There was massive neuronal loss, or death. This was irreversible."

In response to questions, Thogmartin said there was no evidence Schiavo suffered from abuse.

In addition, the report said no evidence existed that Michael Schiavo tried to hasten his wife's death via drugs or other substances as her parents had alleged.

Or the people who die in this very country because they cannot afford even a tiny fraction of the health care that was lavished on "poor, abused" Ms. Schiavo for years and years. 32. It was just a blurb.
Considering the national attention that this case got, you would think that the conclusion to this story would be just as big of news. The reality is that the MSM and White House do not like the ending. So it's going to get buried.

We should be shoving this into Tom Delays face.

148. In a stunning example of (il)logic...
the 3 in Washington with the most "profoundly atrophied" brains, Delay, Frist, and Bush, loudly proclaimed that they were aware of their surroundings so therefore Terri Schiavo was as well. "She's one of us!" declared Delay, to the cheering of thousands of Right wing fundamentalists and Freepers.

Democrats agreed as well, pointing the the totally flat lines of any EEG taken of not only Schiavo, but Bush, Cheney, Delay, Frist and the rest of the Republican congress.

Beauty and Integrity are not necessarily positively correlated.

After enjoying their company for a number of years, some of the most "beautiful" people I know are of average to plain physical appearances.

The "talking heads" on the major news networks mostly look pretty but lack depth. Well duH. Guess that's why I find Jeanie Moos and Keith Obermann so damn attractive, i.e., they demonstrate independent thought and critical thinking skills.

Oh la la! They're both IMHO, drop dead gorgeous! :loveya:

45. He Still Got by With Legalized Murder
It was a most barbaric event, very unworthy of a country such as ours.

How this issue became political, I can't imagine. I go on record as one Democrat who believes her care should have been turned over to her parents and then re-assessed without the influence of a husband who wanted her dead.

Give me a break.

She was dead years ago, keeping her body alive on the machine was insanity.

Go on record all you like, be sure to give your family that same directive should anything happen to you. "Keep my shell alive as long as possible, make me your doll to dress up and prop up for as long as the money and the machines hold out, keep those false hopes and the fairy tale wishes that I might return. Violate god's plan by interfering with my death."

She was dead! You can't murder someone that is DEAD!

63. Do you know what it takes to properly care for someone confined
to a bed? Take into consideration that she had no consciousness, could not move, drink or eat on her own. Could not respond to pain or discomfort. This kind of care requires daily body inspections, constant body adjustment and monitoring.

In my mind, the cruelty here, the abomination to God and humanity, is hanging on to her like this instead of letting her go to rest in peace. Terri Shciavo died a long time ago. What was left was a shell, a container that is physical in nature.

In situations like this we lose sight of the fact that we hang on for ourselves, for our emotional and spiritual needs. We do not hang on for the well being of our loved one or out of higher spiritual beliefs.

Just because we can keep a body alive indefinitely, does not mean that it is the right thing to do.

90. The reason Michael Schiavo stayed in the picture and did NOT hand her
over to her parents is because of court testimony they gave, years ago, in which they eagerly confirmed that they would go to ANY lengths to keep her alive, including open heart surgery on her poor withered body if they thought it would be necessary, AND amputation of any or all of her limbs if her condition deteriorated into gangrene of the extremities. Michael Schiavo saw this wildly intractable viewpoint and said "ENOUGH!" He knew he couldn't leave her in the hands of her parents, for fear of what abnormal, darn near irrational lengths to which they'd go, and to which they'd subject her, in the name of purportedly "keeping her alive." He is also quoted as saying he could not abandon her and allow this to be done to her.

A link for your consideration...

Terri's husband isn't the enemy, guardian says
Published February 25, 2005, by MIKE THOMAS

I received an avalanche of e-mail about Terri Schiavo. The bad information going out on this case is amazing. What is real and what is not? For answers, I turned to University of South Florida professor Jay Wolfson. He was appointed as a guardian ad litem for Terri in 2003 and prepared a report on her for Jeb Bush. After a judge dismissed him in December of that year, Bush and Terri's parents -- Bob and Mary Schindler -- requested he stay on as Terri's guardian. Terri's husband, Michael Schiavo, opposed the request. Wolfson's report is based on court files, depositions, medical records and interviews with everyone involved.

That said, I begin with the most explosive allegation: Did Michael try to kill Terri? Wolfson laughs. "No!"

(snip)

Has Michael withheld treatment?

Wolfson's report states that in the four years after her collapse, Michael "had insistently held to the premise that Theresa could recover and the evidence is incontrovertible that he gave his heart and soul to her treatment and care . . . In late autumn of 1990, following months of therapy and testing and formal diagnoses of persistent vegetative state with no evidence of improvement, Michael took Theresa to California, where she received an experimental thalamic stimulator implant in her brain. Michael remained in California caring for Theresa during a period of several months."

Says Wolfson now: "Michael was adoring of her. One nursing home complained he was hostile and abusive of the staff in championing her care. She was immaculately kept. In 13 years, she never had one bedsore."

(snip)
(THIS IS A CRITICAL PART,BTW)

Why doesn't Michael simply turn Terri over to her family?

From the report: "Testimony provided by members of the Schindler family included very personal statements about their desire and intention to ensure that Theresa remain alive . . . at any and all costs. Nearly gruesome examples were given, eliciting agreement by family members that in the event Theresa should contract diabetes and subsequent gangrene in each of her limbs, they would agree to amputate each limb and would then, were she to be diagnosed with heart disease, perform open-heart surgery. Within the testimony, as part of the hypothetical presented, Schindler family members stated that even if Theresa had told them of her intention to have artificial nutrition withdrawn, they would not do it."

Wolfson told me that when Michael heard this, he said: "That's it. I'm never going to let that happen to her."

92. Her husband did not make the decision
the courts did. Her husband went to court years after being told there was no hope, and asked the court to decide whether or not to pull the plug. He did not want to be put in the position of making that decision. After a lot of expert testimony the court decided to let her go. The RW got after the parents and that's when all this fuss started.

Let me ask you a question.......would you like to be paraded before the media in that state? She had been a vibrant, pretty young woman who cared very much what she looked like, and would have been horrified at the thought that her picture would be plastered all over the media, looking they way she did. After all, she ended up in this state because she was extreme dieting.

I don't believe her parents had her best interests in mind, when they kept this going. If they had, they would have obeyed the courts, and let her die with dignity, rather than in a circus atmosphere.

122. Good point - about the way her parents shamelessly paraded her
video images everywhere, almost as though they were pimping her. If memory serves - I believe I read that they were either not supposed to videotape her, or if they did, they were not allowed to issue that videotape to the public. Either way, just another in a series of violations Schiavo's parents committed against her. AND her marriage. AND her surviving spouse.

I would hope that if such a dreadful event happens to me that my husband would be resolute on my behalf as Michael Schiavo was for Terri. Furthermore, Schiavo never badmouthed his in-laws. He behaved with grace, class, and gentility throughout. On the other hand, HORRIBLE things were said about him, and I don't remember Schiavo's parents or siblings ever coming out to refute those statements, or ask that the randall terrys of the world who were making those statements refrain from doing so, or issue apology or retraction. They just let the fire burn out of control.

The decision was made based on what TERI would have wanted; not what her husband wanted and not what her parents wanted.

As my Mom said to me, "You keep me alive as a veggie and when I do die, I will come back and haunt you for the rest of your natural life."

Would YOU keep somebody alive who thought that just because YOU were wiling to take care of them?

She was already dead, her body was kept alive.

According to her husband, she didn't want to live like a vegetable. He was carrying out her wishes as she couldn't speak for herself.

It is a horrible decision, to pull all life support, even knowing it is what your loved one wants. We had to do this for my father this past Christmas.

It will take me years (if ever) to fully come to terms with what happened that day. And this is only after a few days of watching him suffer and he himself being lucid to answer the doctors when they asked if he wanted to be kept alive if there was no hope.

He knew it was hopeless, we knew it was hopeless. I will miss him until I die.

He would have been so hopeful that the DSM would be the final nail for the Bushies.

He was so upset by Kerry's loss and what was happening to this country under Bush. He talked about it the last day he was lucid.

I find myself reaching for the phone or about to email him a link from here (re: DSM) many a time.

My deepest sympathies are with TS's parents, they wanted their little girl alive. However, she died 15 years ago, it was time to put her body out of it's misery.

This is a tragic tragic situation, the government had no place in this fight where there are no winners, everybody lost a valuable member of their family. :(

Courts heard evidence of what Terry told her best friend. Judges accepted that evidence as fact. I originally thought what you suggested, but once I read that - I thought, you know this guy might actually be doing what his wife wanted - and that was more important than what her parents wanted.

Why would you think it best to keep a brain dead body alive? It could get no pleasure from existence, nor contribute to anyone else's pleasure in life, except to help maintain the parents' delusion. If there is a soul, it was already gone, or worse yet, trapped. I just can't see the rationale.

54. Schiavo autopsy report backs husband - U.S. News - MSNBC.com
MSNBC.COM
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/8225637/

TAMPA, Fla. - In a victory for Michael Schiavo, a coroner who performed an autopsy on Terri Schiavo reported Wednesday that she suffered from an irreversible brain injury and would not have recovered as her parents insisted was possible. It also found no evidence that she was strangled or otherwise abused.

advertisement
"Her brain was profoundly atrophied," Jon Thogmartin, medical examiner for Florida's Pinellas-Pasco County, told a press conference. "There was massive neuronal loss, or death. This was irreversible and no amount of therapy or treatment would have regenerated the massive loss of neurons."

“The brain weighed 615 grams, roughly half of the expected weight of a human brain," he added.

Thogmartin was joined by Dr. Stephen Nelson, who described her condition as "very consistent with a persistent vegetative state," which is what Michael Schiavo and most doctors had contended was the case.

-snip-

Schiavo died March 31 at the age of 41, nearly two weeks after the feeding tube keeping her alive was removed by a court order sought by her husband, Michael Schiavo.

are back in charge."

How soon do you think we'll see tom delay and randall terry and the rest of those DOMESTIC TERRORISTS stepping forward to apologize - to admit they were wrong, and that they overstepped, and to issue a special apology to Michael Schiavo for tormenting and persecuting - and indeed LIBELING AND SLANDERING him?

I wonder if he could sue them for character assassination? Considering his past behavior and track record, I'd guess he's too much of a gentleman to do that, but I sure would think about it seriously if it were me...

60. Well, at least her husband has been exonerated, whether the
fundies believe it or not. I felt so badly for him through that whole thing.

Its amazing, the people in my office who supported her family, all say "of course the autopsy says that," with the emphasis on the says as if its all a bunch of lies.

Its really easy to be right all the time if you only believe what backs you up, I suppose.

93. Surely you're not surprised by that?
These people are anti-science. They didn't accept any informed scientific opinion while her heart was still pumping, so why would they roll over now? I expected three kinds of response:

  1. Those evil atheistic doctors are lying, like they did from the start!
  2. The brain atrophied after death!
  3. Praise the LAHD, it's a miracle! She was conscious with so little brain left!

It's pointless expecting these freaks to engage with the reality-based world.

Somebody has to take a stand in America against libel and slander hiding behind the name of news.

Michael Schiavo is the only slandered, libeled American in recent memory with the balls to stand up and make a difference.

That being said, I wouldn't blame him if he was tired and just wanted to go back to a somewhat normal life.

Normal brains weigh about 1500 grams. It sounds like the CNN anchor would be lucky to have 500 grams. She had a will to live? Bwahahahaha. Of course this does not explain anyone running this country with a 300 gram brain but hey, I'm all for helping the less fortunate.

The right thing was done IMO. I may have not made that decision myself, who knows? Maybe I would have but she certainly was not going to recover.

They can't be expected to issue any public apology, anyway. They don't think they're ever wrong. And besides, it takes a real adult, mature, rational, informed, discerning, open-minded, and clear-eyed, to do such a thing. Someone with a conscience, and with good character. These "people" don't fit any of those descriptions.

"No sane person could look at her (Terri Schiavo) and say she's in a persistent vegetative state."

"Is the controversy over?" :eyes:

These people in the US-State-controlled-corporate-media are such vulgar vulture bastards. They're outta a control, spinning this once great nation torwards a train wreck.

As for the far-right theocrats, their behavior in this case speaks volumes about their principles. Yes, they want to keep Terri Schiavo alive just so it conforms to their beliefs. How pathological can that be?

They don't give a damn about Terri Schiavo. Nor do the parents care. They're all just small-minded, selfish, and intellectually underdeveloped.

I can't belief I'm reading democrats on this thread rejecting the science in this case, or simply ignoring it as to not lose their naive perception.

Here's a quote for the far-right theocrats. It's from Revelations 9:6. I understand they all love that suspenseful thriller:

During those days men will seek death, but will not find it; they will long to die, but death will elude them.

Here's another:

He who lacks time to mourn lacks time to mend.

I'm sure I'm a mess too because I drink coca cola like it's going out of style but they are blaming the victim. Terri was murdered by judicial homicide. If Judge Greer and his buddies backing up one piece of paper, the mandate to murder her, Terri would be alive right now.
These autopsy results should go to the US Congress and to Dr. Bill Frist and Dr. Dave Weldon because they disagree that Terri was PVS.

This is a whitewash. Now they are saying she can't register any thought. But, when Terri found out the tube was coming out, she tried to say "I want to live." Terri started crying because Terri knew what it meant when the tube was coming out.

Then the police threw the family out of the room and she was murdered.

REMEMBER, THESE SHILLS NEVER MET TERRI EITHER. Neither did rogue Judge Greer.

Terri Schiavo's husband believes autopsy results support him

DUNEDIN, Fla. A lawyer for Michael Schiavo (SHY'-voh) says the autopsy results on Schiavo's brain-damaged wife back up what he's been saying for years.

Attorney George Felos (FEE'-lohs) pointed out that the doctors who performed the autopsy concluded that the results were "very consistent" with a persistent vegetative state. He says that confirms what Michael Schiavo had been saying -- that his wife had no hope of recovery.

Felos also pointed to the finding that Terri Schiavo was blind. He says this refutes the claims by the woman's parents that she was able to see them and react to them.

And, Felos says the autopsy confirmed that Terri Schiavo hadn't been physically abused.

He says Michael Schiavo is "pleased" to hear the "hard science."

There is something deranged about both the father and the mother to be in total non-stop denial about the condition of their daughter and laying the blame on Michael Schiavo. This has gone on far too long in the public area. The other person who needs to be censured about this is Gov. Jeb Bush who used this case for political gain and capital and who has wasted millions of Florida taxpayer dollars for his own career glorification. Terry Schiavo should be allowed to rest in peace and dignity.

Check that again - "she appears to respond to visual stimuli, said Frist, despite an autopsy that now shows she was blind.

Now, hear me - some people will say this means Frist is a bad doctor, or that he had no basis diagnosing Schiavo from some edited video, or that the's just a big fat liar who wanted to appease a buch of people who wanted to keep Schiavo alive for political reasons.

I disagree. I think ,folks, that we have proof of a real life miracle here! Think about it - Schiavo, according to "science," was not capable of sight - but she saw nonetheless!
Think about it! How can you trust "science" when God works in mysterious ways! He can, as we know, give sight to the blind - and He did it for Terry! It's a miracle, and more proof that God is the one true truth, and that the righteous Senator Frist saw the true Path in trusting to God and his miracles, and not some liberal secularist doctors and their "science!"

We need to make sure that these sinning doctors cannot sprad the heretical, lying creed of "biology" and "medicine" anymore, sine it conflicts with and denies God's power and glory and love of all His children! We need to burn down teh medical schools and hospitals, all dens of heathen iniquity that deny God's power and word! And we need to make sure that only God-loving men like Doctor Frist are among our leaders, that the hole Word of God replaces liberal, secularist "laws" in our courts!

Bothers and Sisters, we need to overthrow the tyrrany of "science" and "medicine" and "earhtly laws" and put our grat nation black in the Righteous hand of God!

Are you with me, Brothers and Sisters?!

Yeah, right! Now take your meds. :P

176. Or they might say
"some people will say this means Frist is a bad doctor, or that he had no basis diagnosing Schiavo from some edited video, or that the's just a big fat liar who wanted to appease a buch of people who wanted to keep Schiavo alive for political reasons."

He's all of the above.

You can of course supply documentation showing how far back she would have been blind?

182. Why not just read the autopsy report
I think that's considered "documentation".

Terri suffered hypoxia (oxygen cut of from her brain) that caused her brain damage. That occurred over 15 years ago. Logic should tellyou she was blind for all those years.

183. Here's a link to the autopsy report
Terri's sight center in her brain was destroyed over 15 years ago through hypoxia. That means she was blind since day 1.

Here's your documentation.

180. Is anyone here surprised by the Schindler's reaction?
These people are hard-wired for denial. They can't bear to admit they were wrong. If you really love someone, you have to know when to let them go. They were keeping her alive out of their own selfishness. Sometimes it takes courage to say goodbye.

My brother-in-law died in February of a blood clot one week after a routine angioplasty. The paramedics worked on him for twenty minutes, but could not revive him. If Jack had lived through the loss of oxygen, he would have been left an asparagus. Nobody in my family, including my sister and her children, could have been able to bear to see him like that.

I lost any use for the Schindlers when they single-handedly resurrected that fame-seeker loser, Randall Terry, and dragged the country through all that unnecessary bullshit.

Remember, he diagnosed her after watching a video, and he IS a physician.

Wouldn't that be the most ironic twist to this whole epic?

193. Either that, or it will finally dawn on these parents how shamefully...
they handled their daughter's situation. Can you imagine having had the opportunity to embrace her husband and to be a part of her last days--which they could have, had they not engaged in an unnecessary feud with Michael--but instead trivializing and media-izing every single minute of her last days?

They are certainly going to realize how the right betrayed them. I wonder if they will accept their realization with grace, or with the usual controversial manner that they have engaged everything they have been a part of, in the past several years.

It's their loss. They lost their daughter, and they lost any chance to hold their heads high through the period of her death to now.

I almost pity those people...if they weren't so despicable.

214. The Schindler - Schiavo feud was started by her father's greed
The NY Times did an article on the history of the relationship between the families and said that they had been close until after the malpractice suit was settled in Terri's favor. According to the Times, Mr. Schindler said something like "so how much do I get?" to Michael Schiavo. Schiavo was completely disgusted by his father - in - law's greed and things went downhill from there.

217. "Cash Cow"
Unfortunately, I think that describes the Schindler's whole attitude.

If I recall correctly, the original rift with Michael Schiavo came about after he won the settlement from the doctors who originally treated her. He had already spent thousands of dollars in taking care of her, and faced thousands more in continuing care, and Daddy Schindler demanded a "cut" of the money--as if this was some sort of lottery prize he'd won, and Daddy wanted a share of the ticket.

They ended up in blows over it, and stopped speaking.

And yet...this situation was so awful. I remember being close to tears and shaking when I called my senators about it.

But think of what it did, ultimately. It not only exposed the crooks and liars, but (if you take a look at the autopsy report)...

Terri Schiavo's autopsy, and the fact that Michael Schiavo authorized that autopsy, will benefit medical science for many years to come. The neuropathologist made some comparisons and hinted at questions when he wrote his report. His findings were very exact, and any previously documented findings upon which he based his findings were scrupulously cited.

He made some interesting discoveries. Maybe that's why, during the press conference, the medical examiner stated that the findings would continue to be studied.

Terri Schiavo's death goes far beyond the political, and Michael Schiavo was the one who allowed that to happen. :toast:

200. Hey, you can live with half a brain.
That is, if you're a Republican.

Seriously, though, the amount of attention focused on this poor woman is terrible. Why can't social conservatives just leave her the hell alone? This was, and in my mind remains, a family affair. It does not require the attention of Bill Frist and Co.

205. Frist acknowledges the corners were "exactly right"
Bits of article from The Guardian (http://www.guardian.co.uk/worldlatest/story/0,1280,-5078458,00.html)

Frist, R-Tenn., said he never made his own diagnosis but did argue there wasn't enough information about Schiavo's condition to justify allowing her husband to remove her feeding tube against her parents' wishes.

``I raised the question, 'Is she in a persistent vegetative state or not?' I never made the diagnosis, never said that she was not. I did say that certain tests should be performed to determine that before starving her to death,'' Frist said in the interview.

<snip>

``I question it based on a review of the video footage. ... And that footage, to me, depicted something very different than persistent vegetative state,'' Frist said at the time

<snip>
``The diagnosis they made is exactly right. It's the pathology, I'll respect that. I think it's time to move on,'' Frist said on CBS' ``The Early Show.''

209. Circus of the Macabre. Make it stop! Make it stop!

"...he Schindlers ... plan to discuss the autopsy with other medical experts and may take some unspecified legal action."

Hello? Take LEGAL action? WHAT legal action? Just WHAT the HELL is there left to exploit??? Oh sorry, I mean... take legal action on?!!?

No wait, let me guess. Tom De Lay will subpoena Terri's ashes, so Bill Frist can examine them and declare that Terri is not actually dead, but simply in a "persistent crematorial state." Then Bush can fly out of Crawford at midnight to sign legislation stating that human ashes are included in his "culture of life," and deserve every shot at life they can get.

Then Randall Terry can whip the ConXtians up into a frenzy over all over again, convincing them that Terry is just really, REALLY dehydrated, and what with a little holy water, some ol' fashioned preyin' and a few more donations, she'll bounce right back.

And the money will once again start flowing into the Schindler's exploitative website.

Sick. Sick. Sick.
