Cape support for Bush polls at 37.8 percent
By KEVIN DENNEHY
STAFF WRITER
He calls himself an independent, but Walter Ehrhardt hasn't given a Democrat his vote in a presidential race since Lyndon Johnson.

He admired Truman, trusted Reagan and liked George H.W. Bush. But this President Bush? Not a big fan.

Ehrhardt, 73, who moved to Brewster after retiring as a Boston police officer, recently saw one of his grandsons return from Iraq. He worries another one, a Marine reserve, will be called soon. If he had his way, all the troops would be pulled out.

''I personally believe President Bush lied to us,'' Ehrhardt said. ''I think these are unnecessary deaths, both for our military and the Iraqi civilians. ... We're really in a swamp there. And how do you get out?''

A new poll suggests that local support for Bush is withering, with Iraq and a struggling economy contributing to a low 37.8 percent favorability rating.

2. Frankly, I think that poll is off
The thirty seven percent must be hiding out somewhere...either that, or they included the fatcats who come for a holiday because the Hamptons is overpriced and they are still looking for a "deal." Won't find much of one (relatively, perhaps), but that won't stop them from looking...

27. I am a native of the place
My family has roots there that go back nearly a century....and yes, there are a lot of summer pigs there, but the regular folk (even the newcomers who have been there for less than say, fifty years) and the retirees are ok with me. The regular folk have the history, the retirees keep a lot of businesses that would close in the winter OPEN, and they are, for the most part, nice types.

The summer clowns in their McMansions are another story...assholes, but it is the price you pay for what would otherwise be an unsustainable tax rate. A bit of a housing crash would not be unwelcome on the Cape...not a huge one, just enough of a dip to let some of the regular folk get into good, sturdy houses.

It is part of the reason I want to move up to Prince Edward Island...they don't have as much of that Big Spender-Massive House shit going on, at least not yet....

9. So Mr. Ehrhardt voted for Bush in 2004
But didn't realize that he was endorsing the ill-considered war on Iraq? Gee, I'm real sorry his grandsons are being marched off to war, but when someone insists on standing on the tracks, it's hard to feel sorry when he gets freight-trained. Now is a piss-poor time to start wondering how we're going to get out of Iraq.

Dean called Repukes "white, predominately Christians." The horror!

18. And here we have another idiotic interpretation of bush's pigheadedness
Public approval of Bush has fluctuated since he was elected, and always will, said Dave Neal, a longtime Republican fundraiser and campaigner on Cape Cod.

"He's taken on some tough issues, including Social Security and the continuation of the war in Iraq," Neal said. "Very tough issues. And he's sticking with them."

What a dope. bush created those issues. He manufactured the Social Security crisis. Take away the Iraq War, take away irresponsible tax cuts, voila! No crisis.

Fox seems to have not conducted a poll since April. Aren't they interested in Dear Leader's approval numbers anymore?

24. That is truly amazing to see that in black and white (& confetti)
7/20/01 his numbers are in the dumps, 9/20/01 it's like there's a new president. People love him when horrible things are happening. That peak after 3/20/03 must have corresponded with camera crews racing across the dessert with our tankers, I wonder what happened to cause the 12/03 bump (is that when Hussein was 'found' in his spider hole?)

23. Those people in Cape Cod have little sense of gratitude
After that "Mission Accomplished" speech on the aircraft carrier, I heard 'cod piece' sales were up 75%. And now, the citizens of Cape Cod have forgotten all about that good deed done them.
