Maryland (D) candidate critically wounded
Maryland candidate critically wounded

BALTIMORE, Maryland (AP) -- A social activist and perennial political candidate was stabbed multiple times in an attack at his home Monday afternoon, police said.

A. Robert Kaufman, 74, a Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate, was in critical condition, a hospital spokeswoman said Monday night.

Investigators believe the attack stemmed from a landlord-tenant dispute.

"We don't have any suspects in custody, but we do have good leads," said Officer Troy Harris, a police spokesman.

3. He runs, but does not win office
He uses the platform to make his points. That said, it is questionable if he will make it. Multiple stab wounds at his age, critical condition...not a good scenario.

8. mfume, cardin, van hollen
All have been mentioned as possible Democratic candidates for the MD Senate slot being vacated by Paul Sarbanes in 2006.

And before the tinfoil hats go nuts, there is no -- no -- chance that the attack on Kaufman is part of some conspiracy. The guy is a perennial candidate who runs in Democratic primaries, gets minimal attention, and loses big. In 2003, he got all of 645 votes in the Baltimore Mayoral primary. He reached a highwater mark in 2004, getting 7 percent of the votes running against Mikulski in the Democratic Senate primary. Not sure if he's actually ever been a candidate in a general election.
