At least two injured after several explosions reported in Iran (6/14)
By The Associated Press
(6/14/05 - TEHRAN, Iran) — Three small explosions shattered windows and injured at least two people in the southeastern city of Zahedan, state media said Tuesday.

Authorities were investigating whether the blasts were linked to Friday's presidential elections. There was no immediate claim of responsibility.

The Zahedan area, near Iran's borders with Pakistan and Afghanistan, has been the scene of clashes between police and drug smugglers.

One blast occurred at about 4:30 a.m. and two went off earlier, the Islamic Republic News Agency reported. Windows were shattered and at least two people suffered slight injuries, the agency said.

1. Now the Brits are sending 5000 troops
to Afghanistan. Can't imagine why they would do that?

3. UK to reduce troops in Iraq, send more to Afghanistan: Reports
A related bit of info:

Britain will reduce the number of its troops in Iraq soon and send more to Afghanistan to fight remnants of the Taliban, a senior military officer said in remarks published on Monday.

The Iraq contingent will decrease in "battalion chunks" following the elections expected at the end of the year, Air Marshal Glenn Torpy said, quoted by The Daily Telegraph newspaper.

By next year, the 1,000-man British force in Afghanistan is likely to be increased considerably as the army, backed by Royal Air Force Harrier jets, move into more dangerous parts of the country to combat the growing heroin trade and to hunt down remaining Taliban.

---

The Afghanistan deployment depends on the situation in the Middle East becoming more "manageable", although Torpy expected "a satisfactory conclusion" to the Iraq operation within 18 months.
