MARGIN NARROWS: Last appeals made as polls show tight race

John Wildermuth and Carla Marinucci, Chronicle Political Writers Tuesday, October 7, 2003

Huntington Beach, Orange County -- California's historic gubernatorial recall came down to the final frantic hours of campaigning Monday as both Republican Arnold Schwarzenegger and Democrat Gray Davis crisscrossed the state in a last-minute appeal for votes.

Monday marked the end of an election campaign that began in part as a revolt against politics-as-usual but ended with familiar themes: Democrats and Republicans sniping at each other as candidates raised a staggering amount of money -- $58 million in total.

Today, California voters will determine whether Davis is to become the only California governor ever recalled from office and whether an action movie star from Austria, one of 135 candidates on the ballot, takes over the state's top job. Whoever wins will have to clean up a budget mess and deal with an unruly Legislature.

Republican sources said their tracking showed the "yes" on recall had taken a dive over the weekend as stories broke about Schwarzenegger's troubles, though the numbers had rebounded to 51-53 percent by Monday. Davis' camp insisted that its overnight tracking polls showed a statistical dead heat on the recall question, with "yes" on the recall now below 50 percent for the first time.

1. Maria must be stoned to say this...
<Shriver called her husband "an example of a great public servant" and told supporters that "the reason he is in this race is because of you. . . . He wants to make a better life for you." >

To be "an example of" something, don't you actually have to BE what you are an example of? When the &$%@ was Arnie ever a "public servant"? And who is this "you" she references? Dubya? Enron?
