7. I think he meant
that while the NG units wait around to get shifted somewhere else, they have to pay for their own food. He was relaying something a constituent wrote to him about her husband. He didn't elaborate, but I surmise that they're in some kind of limbo where they're not technically deployed, therefore the government doesn't have to supply them with anything. I think this is exclusive to the NG.

9. While not deployed, they have to pay
for their own food anyway, unless they are on a meal card. And if they are married, they aren't on a meal card.

21. I think what
you heard may have been in error. They don't LOSE anything. Some who do not pay income tax, may not get an income tax child tax credit, but I think even that has been rectified.

18. Oh, definitely they chose NG units based on anti-bush states.....
Oregon's had the largest draw on our reservists in history...from the very beginning.

We also got shafted on homeland security money as well.

6. He is talking about the soldiers that remain in Iraq.
Some have been told they will be there until January 2004, others have been stationed there indefinitely.

What will happen if there is a flood or other catastrophe and the National Guard units are in Iraq? They didn't sign up for a full time war abroad.

26. The Only Memeber of Congress that has someone serving in Iraq
Senator Johnson is the only member of Congress that has someone on the ground in Iraq, his son.

Sgt Johnson is assigned to the 101st Airborne Division, and if I remember correctly he's in the infantry.

There are 3 other members of Congress that have family members in the military they are all officers, 2 are in the USAF, and the other is a major in the US Army. But currently they are not stationed in Iraq.

29. Followed by Stevens and his "HULK" tie
Okay, I just caught the last few moments of Byrd reading the letters, then Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) took the floor. I admit I'm not sure what he was saying, as I was totally distracted by the sinfully ugly and tacky tie he was sporting, with the word "HULK" in huge letters along its length. What the hell is up with that? The guy was supposed to be addressing grave issues and he's wearing a HULK tie and looking like a clown?

30. Article explains tie...
http://www.msnbc.com/local/KTUU/M305494.asp?0LA=abk72

Reporters marvel at Stevens' greenness

Washington, D.C., June 20 - After more than three decades in the Senate, Alaska's Ted Stevens can hardly be called green around the ears. But green is exactly what Stevens wants to be. The senator is celebrating the movie premier and the continued comic book success of his giant green hero: the Incredible Hulk.

(cut)

"I got to wearing it. And one day I wore it when we had a terrible battle on the floor, and we won. And someone asked me how I did it and I said, 'Well, I had the Hulk tie on.' And since then, when we expect a battle I wear the Hulk tie," Stevens said.
A tie that's now legendary.
"When I see the Hulk tie on Ted Stevens, I know he's pumped up. I know he's ready to go, and I know that we're going to win," Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist said.

57. Hulk tie is a symbol - for when he's planning to kick ass.
The guy holds a lot of power in the senate (no, I don't like him, either) and wears the tie as a symbol of that power, especially when he's pissed about something.

Please, Sen. Stevens, grow up.
