New York Times:
U.N. Party Planners Wonder, Will Bush and Friends Attend?
By DEAN E. MURPHY
Published: May 29, 2005

SAN FRANCISCO, May 28 - Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has indicated she will not attend. So has former President George H. W. Bush. The controversial nominee for United Nations ambassador, John R. Bolton, has not been heard from, nor has President Bush, who was sent an invitation in February.

Getting big-name administration officials to attend events outside Washington is always a long shot because of their busy schedules. But in the case of the 60th anniversary celebration of the founding of the United Nations, which will take place in San Francisco late next month, some organizers are wondering if something beyond scheduling conflicts is at play.

Nancy L. Peterson, president of the United Nations Association of San Francisco, a nonprofit group that has been planning the celebration for a year, said no explanation had been offered by the White House. But she said some members were worried that President Bush's seeming disdain for the world organization might be behind the silence and no-shows.

"We are a month out, and that's cutting it close," Ms. Peterson said. "I think the administration is slighting the American people by not stepping forward on behalf of the United Nations at this turning point."

At the last big anniversary celebration, 10 years ago in San Francisco, where the United Nations charter was signed in 1945, President Clinton played a prominent role. Sherri Ferris, who is organizing the 60th anniversary invitations, said Mr. Clinton's office had indicated that an appearance next month "is still under consideration."...

2. A sense a "scheduling conflict"
The best excuse for any politician to avoid an event.

4. The San Francisco Bay Area could produce over 200,000 protesters ...
... if DimSon wanted to visit. I can just imagine his handlers facing the prospect of closing down the Embarcadero and Financial district so the Chimperor could drag his knuckles up Market Street. A visit to Fisherman's Wharf by Caesar Disgustsus would be an awesome spectacle of protest and wholly unmotivated police. There ain't a snowball's chance in Fresno that the puppeteers would even try it.

... um, maybe no representation by the USA is NOT all bad? That is, if it's between Bolton and nobody, my vote goes to the latter. ;)

7. Disgraceful cowards. It's totally amazing. "Busy schedules" my
ass. Bush has been burning jet fuel for all those SS "events" without a problem.

I hope Clinton shows up and publicly shames this whole bunch of assholes/thugs.

9. Since the UN is a humanitarian organization
I don't think * warrants an invite.
I'm on the planning committee for the 60th celebration at my local branch of the UN and we are having a bash! We need to support the UN inspite of this administrations attempts to destroy it.

12. These little vile roaches,
that run our country unfortunately, think the civil war and WW2 turned out "wrong". The UN should be against them in every way possible.
