Meanwhile, after a pause the day before for a local religious holiday, protests resumed Friday with hundreds of school teachers blocking access roads to this city.

Police on Friday used tear gas to disperse the school teachers, who repeatedly regrouped, maintaining the blockade of the two main roads connecting this city of 800,000 people with the rest of the country. Access to the airport was also interrupted.

The government on Friday was trying to open a dialogue with the leaders of the protests, but these remained adamant in their demand that any negotiation should include the nationalization of the oil industry, which the government rejects.
