FARC slaughters officials in rural town

A deadly attack by Colombia's main rebel group on the leaders of this sweltering town has revived fears that politicians in small towns are once again being targeted by the country's relentless leftist guerrillas. "They're trying to destroy the institution of democracy by killing us," said Oscar Nunez, director of the National Federation of Town Councils.

Authorities say up to 30 rebels from the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, armed with grenades and assault rifles, barged into a town council meeting here Tuesday afternoon and killed six people, including five town councilors. Bystanders and police officers were also hit by bullets and were being treated at area hospitals.

The attack appears to be a direct challenge to President Alvaro Uribe, who last year launched a US-supported military offensive in this region some 300km south of Bogota. The offensive, called Plan Patriot, sent thousands of Colombian troops to hunt down FARC rebels in their jungle hideouts and remove them from small towns and villages where they held sway for years.

There is no such thing as Democracy in South and Central America, the Philippines, Asia, Africa. Just because poor people have a right to vote in rigged elections where the two candidates are either placed puppets of the American, Chinese, European governments or if they're lucky, a local crony mafia leader might make it with the blessings of the American Gov.
