Pelosi to President Bush: 'No Dice' on Social Security Privatization
WASHINGTON, May 26 /U.S. Newswire/ -- House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, Congressmen Charles Rangel of New York, Sander Levin of Michigan and other House Democrats held a news conference today to discuss how Social Security privatization would slash benefits for millions of America's seniors, disabled, and survivors. Immediately after the news conference, Democratic Members of Congress testified before the Ways and Means Subcommittee on Social Security. Below are Pelosi's remarks:

"When Social Security came forth, it was an entrepreneurial idea of the New Deal. It promised Americans that in return for a lifetime of work, they would have a secure, dignified, and independent retirement.

"In times of distress, if they lost their breadwinner, their spouse, or parent, survivors would be taken care of. Or in a time of disability, the American people would be there for them because of what had been put in the Social Security trust fund.

"Congress has always honored that. As recently as 1983, there was a bipartisan initiative with a Democratic Speaker, Tip O'Neill, and a Republican President, Ronald Reagan, and they came together to strengthen Social Security, which is secure until the middle of this century.

"Along comes President Bush who wants to create a crisis and manufacture an issue, and in so doing turn a guaranteed benefit into a guaranteed gamble. And to that the Democrats and American people say: 'Mr. President, no dice!'

1. tumbling dice
Tumbling Dice
------The Rolling Stones

(M. Jagger/K. Richards)

Women think I'm tasty, but they're always tryin' to waste me
And make me burn the candle right down,
But baby, baby, I don't need no jewels in my crown.

'Cause all you women is low down gamblers,
Cheatin' like I don't know how,
But baby, baby, there's fever in the funk house now.
This low down bitchin' got my poor feet a itchin',
You know you know the duece is still wild.

Baby, I can't stay, you got to roll me
And call me the tumblin' dice.

Always in a hurry, I never stop to worry,
Don't you see the time flashin' by.
Honey, got no money,
I'm all sixes and sevens and nines.
Say now, baby, I'm the rank outsider,
You can be my partner in crime.

But baby, I can't stay,
You got to roll me and call me the tumblin',
Roll me and call me the tumblin' dice.

Oh, my, my, my, I'm the lone crap shooter,
Playin' the field ev'ry night.

Baby, can't stay,
You got to roll me and call me the tumblin' dice, (Call me the tumblin')
Got to roll me, Got to roll me, Got to roll me (Oh yeah)
Got to roll me. Got to roll me, Got to roll me ( Keep on rolling, Keep on rolling)

If I'm not mistaken, Bush is, sooner or later, getting EVERY DAMN THING he wants. Correct me if I'm wrong but the gutless Democratic Senators will fold like a cheap suit at the last minute? Bolton too will be confirmed by COB on DA Senate floor. Privatization of SS will be a breeze after that defeat as total compliance will be expected ... um, DEMANDED lest Frist's Nuclear Option. If so, I've reached full "disillusionment" - learned helplessness - save for my promise to myself to NOT EVER vote for another DINO.

11. When I was in high school
I knew a 13 year old girl who lost both parents in a car crash. They were only in their 30s. The girl got her father's SS. Her grandma, a widow who raised her, was also on Social Security and worked part time. Social Security isn't just for retired people. Without SS, the girl and her Grandma would have been up the creek without a paddle.

I think Bush is totally ignoring these people.
