Transformer Explodes Outside World Bank
I found this article after a friend emailed from downtown DC. His initial email reads:

Additional underground utility explosions have been reported. All personnel should remain inside their buildings until the situation has been brought under full control.

Secret service directing traffic and stuff!

The first article I've seen on comes from WTOP, Washington, DC, news radio.

WASHINGTON - Outside the World Bank, there were three separate explosions of manhole covers, FBI spokeswoman Deb Weirman tells WTOP.

"These manhole covers blew into the air spewing smoke, debris and some small flames. This appears to be have been caused by an electrical transformer in an underground tunnel," Weirman says.

"This is simply electrical in nature," Weirman says.

2. I think there are explosions like this all the time in D.C.
There was one when I visited there a few years ago. I don't know of any other place in the country where this happens and it's pretty freaky!

4. World Bank workers sent home...
World Bank spokesman Damian Milverton tells WTOP the World Bank Building does not have air conditioning and that workers have been told to go home.

ABC News in Washington, DC, has a blurb about this, too.

And thanks for the update to "Don't panic". Almost premonitory.

5. Manhole explosion happened maybe 6 to 8 months ago....
.....underground in the immediate vicinity of Leavenworth Prison.

The story on a local TV station was removed from it's website within an hour and no mention of it was reported by any other source.

There are however some interesting results when searching "manhole+explosion" via Google.

6. World Bank
It's not a big deal. There is no electricity in the MC (Main Complex) building and J building, which means no A/C. Staff in those buildings were evacuated. Jim Wolfensohn came on the intercom about an hour and a half ago to say that staff in those two buildings should be allowed back in to get their stuff in an hour or so and then could go home. Until then they should enjoy the sunshine or go to friends in other buildings and use their telephones, etc. After they were able to get their stuff they could go home for the day. Other buildings, like the F building where I'm located (21st and Penn) haven't been affected and so we are continuing to work. As another poster mentioned, we have these explosions in DC, if not on a regular basis, at least often enough to be used to them.

8. Is this a fairly new type of problem?
How long have exploding manholes been occuring? I know that D.C. and New York have had the problem but no good explanation as to why this continues to happen, and when this type of problem started.

I imagine when someone gets killed and sues there will be more answers uncovered.

It was like Baghdad in Georgetown the past few summers--the manholes were blowing like mad, made worse by the fact that they are screwed down with no where for pressure to escape...

20. Well you see, ACTUALLY-
Edited on Fri May-27-05 12:06 AM by BeHereNow
The reason this one exploded was because
the KKKabal has been using a secret tunnel
from Cheney's bunker to this location
for pool parties, they feel more comfortable
near their element and all.
Their excessive use of the area simply
overloaded the system.

26. Sorry, I am caught in the fact that
it came from "below" the surface, near the
manifestation of evil incarnate (the World Bank and IMF)
I like to imagine that it was actually an invitation
from hell below for them to come on down
where they belong.
I am SO outraged by the onslaught of atrocities,
you see.
My coping technique is all about metaphors...

31. Disclaimer
I have no financial interest in Honda, or in the company whose
website I linked the picture off of. They were just the first
image of that genny that I found on google. I bought mine from
a local dealer.

I would prefer that those who buy generators buy quiet ones,
and I'd like to see the more being built like that one and fewer of
the really noisy ones like what the people who camp next to us always
seem to have.

The EU3000 is 49db.
Some other gennys the same size are as high as 80db.
