Paisley denounces Bill Clinton
Former US President Bill Clinton was tonight denounced as a political has-been by the leader of the Democratic Unionists, the Reverend Ian Paisley.

The North Antrim MP launched a savage broadside at Mr Clinton after the former US President challenged, during a visit to Dublin, Mr Paisley`s claim that the Good Friday Agreement was dead.

Mr Paisley said: "The discredited ex-President of the United States of America, Bill Clinton, simply revealed his unmitigated cheek in going to a country that wants to destroy Ulster`s place in the United Kingdom and then lectures us that our democratic expression of our own future must be set aside to conform to the will of the country that claims supremacy over it.

"The Belfast Agreement, which in itself is devoid of democracy, has made it clear that we must have a new beginning, and that beginning must close and bar the gates of its government to terrorists of whatever side they come from.

"Clinton cannot have his way to force IRA / Sinn Fein terrorists into the government of this part of the United Kingdom, as I told him to his face when he was in Belfast."

Mr Clinton, who is in Dublin to help launch a national suicide prevention scheme for young people in the Irish Republic, insisted that there was no viable alternative to the Good Friday Agreement.

4. Paisley has links to Bush....
During the 2000 primaries, Bush's speech at Bob Jones University was considered a turning point. He'd lost New Hampshire to McCain & badly needed to win South Carolina. So, he spoke at Bob Jones, despite its history of racial & religious prejudice. And won the primary--using dirty tactics.

Bob Jones Sr was active in the campaign against (Catholic) Al Smith--long ago. Bob Jones Jr flew to Northern Ireland to give Ian Paisley an honorary degree on his release from prison. At the time, Catholics were fighting for Civil Rights in the North & Paisley was in stern opposition. This was just before the old IRA got involved. Paisley has spoken at BJU many times & two sons are on the faculty. Other recipients of BJU honors: George Wallace, Lester Maddox, Strom Thurmond & (more recently) John Ashcroft.

Bush invited Paisley to his first St Patrick's day celebration at the White House. His administration has not done much to foster the Good Friday Agreement--one of Clinton's accomplishments.

The Constitution of the Republic of Ireland once expressed the need to reunite the island as one country--this was removed. However, the Good Friday Agreement had officials from the Republic & the North working together in some matters.

And Paisley is wrong to refer to "Ulster." Three counties of the old province were excluded from Northern Ireland--too many Catholics.

5. Discredited?
Sez who? I don't think a "discredited ex-president" would get so much attention from Poppy Bush, and even Dumbya.

11. It's interesting you should say that
My father said just a few days ago...

"It's the people that hate Clinton that make him so popular, and make sure he'll go down in history. They still can't quit talking about him, and he's been out of office for 5 years."

23. Northern Ireland is Britain's last colonial holding
and has Ireland been a vassal state for about 800 years. There will never be peace in Ireland until Britain gets out and stays out. I do not approve of terrorism by either side, but the Protestants in NI are simply wrong, morally and ethically.
