Black community uncomfortable with Pompano pastor's GOP ties

The Rev. O'Neal Dozier, pastor of the Worldwide Christian Center in Pompano Beach, is one of the Bush Administration's "go-to" African-Americans.

He's at the White House today, the second time this year, where he'll speak with Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice on Africa, stop by Jim Towey's office to discuss faith-based initiatives and counsel an assistant attorney general on civil rights.

"They said they want to come up with a strategy concerning the problems of Africa," Dozier said. "Then, they called me back and said, since I was going to be there, would I meet with Assistant U.S. Attorney General Alex DeCosta to discuss civil rights."

But some Pompano Beach residents are doubtful about Dozier's ability to represent black interests. The Republican minister preaches conservative politics from the pulpit, while a majority of blacks remain liberal Democrats.

1. if they cant vote out a pastor, i hope they all migrate to nearby churches

that have solid respectable pastors === ie, democratic pastors.

a republican these days is not a respectable person. Not when that party is guilty of creating mass homelessness {RR cut 2/3rds of housing vouchers in early eighties} and just now plans a budget that will increase those living on a piece of sidewalk by two million. {SF newspaper article quoted here at DU is source for that estimate.}

Homelessness kills 1OO OOO / yr from heat, cold, disease, rat bites and hunger. {food stamp cuts have caused 12 million to sink into hunger}

All done by the republicans. Not the slightest overlap with what Jesus preached. {see my sig for scripture quoting}

Since planned homelessness and hunger has no overlap with what Jesus said, .....

One can be a republican or one can be a Christian. There is zero overlap.

2. Either vote him out as Pastor or find another Church
When the Catholic Church picked Ratzinberger I became a Unitarian, because I can't vote out my Priest.

3. a re-work of my letter to g lewis at the sun-sentinel:
The Bushes will wipe their respective asses off with O’Neal Dozier whenever they no longer need him.

Then, he will get to know the true Bushes—and perhaps then,after they've wiped their asses off with him, he might find a River of Mercy that will guide him on to a true pastorship of what God and Jesus are all about.

All of this crap about CONSERVATIVE POLITICS has nothing to do with Christ’s message.

And, Dozier seemingly has not found that out... or he has, but it is more profitable and expedient for him to toe the Bush line because
it lines his pockets with money, and with a sense of power and importance, albeit false, and fills his mouth with false prophesizing.

After he gets his ass kicked by the bushes, he might want to read Boethius’ Consolation of Philosophy. He might find solace in finding out that the road to heaven is not paved with gold nor with bush friendship.

4. Uh....
there's a few too many references to asses in there if you expect to have it taken seriously. You might want to tone down the language a bit, your point is well taken, but the wording is a little coarse for most readers. Just a suggestion. :hi:

8. Rove/Bush is basically asking Dozier to do a tap-dance for GOP crumbs.
Last week, Bill Frist gathered a dozen of these sellouts in Washington to push for an "up or down vote" on Janice Brown.

9. What are Democrats offering those "sell-outs"? Many of them may be
desperate for funds to run church programs that are overwhelmed with human needs. In the past couple of decades, Democrats have allowed Republicans to "reform" welfare and food stamps so they're no longer reliable sources of support for the poor, to incarcerate African-Americans 8 times as frequently as Caucasians, to pull back on enforcement of affirmative action. Put yourself in the shoes of a pastor who's trying to fill gaps caused by decades of government cutbacks. Why NOT "tap dance for GOP crumbs"?

And what is the Democratic plan for urban America? If we want to win in 2008, we need a better urban strategy than just condemning pastors who take "faith-based" funding as "sell-outs". The only 2004 candidate who even talked consistently about poverty and "two Americas" was John Edwards.

11. you want the dems to give money to the black churches?

more money then the bushgang is giving them? and then they will be dems.?

bad idea.

if the pastors are overwhelmed with human needs it's because the bushgang has caused it.

americans pay enough in taxes to have our human needs met. but the criminal bushgang is using all the money on their quest to control the worlds oil, gas and water. that's why americans have human needs.

12. Personally, I'd prefer to see government do its job and not slough poverty
off onto churches to deal with it. Economic development, raising the earned income tax credit, raising the minimum wage, enforcing banks' obligation to lend in the inner city, and other ideas come to mind.

But it just offends me to see black pastors singled out for invective in these forums when they do what many other former pillars of Democratic suppport have done, with no attention paid to WHY they may be doing what they're doing.

13. We've got an interesting thread going over in GDP
concerning these so-called "conservative black pastors". Specifically, it's about Bill Frist's connection with Bishop Harry Jackson and the involvement of Nurevelation.com. I personally suspect that there is a well-organized rightwing attempt to present a manufactured conservative consensus in the African-American religious community. There's been some interesting but inconclusive sleuthing. I'd be real curious to see if Dozier has any connections to it. Click below to read the thread.
